axle shims and gaskets

On 49 8N, I am replacing the axle hub and seal. The axle was a bit loose so I want to adjust the shims. When I removed them I noticed there was a thin paper gasket next to the brake back plate and one between two of the shims. The rest had nothing. Should there be gaskets between the shims? I have read all of the howtos and none mention gaskets. One more thing, do the shims go between the brake back plate and the trumpet or between the bearing cap and the brake back plate? Does it matter?

Only paper shims are available now. You can use either or a combination of paper and metal. Either side of the backing plate works. If using all new paper shims, you can use at least one on each side of the backing plate to help seal, if shim count allows. Though every tractor can be different I usually end up with at least three or four on each side.
