B fan shaft

I have torn my B down for repainting. It weeps a slight amount of oil around the tube and the plate that bolts on to the governor housing as well as the felt on the front of the fan shaft behind the fan. I have been told that if I remove the fan shaft from the governor to make sure the shaft doesn't turn otherwise when I reinstall it and I do not get the gears aligned as they were before disassembly the shaft will howl terribly due to the teeth on the gears not mated up like they were before.

Question 1,...can I slide the tube off from over the fan shaft and replace the rubber seal that way?

Question 2,...has anyone "converted" so to say the front retainer and felt to using an oil seal instead?

You don't need to worry about turning the fanshaft. Spin it as much as you want.As long as you don't lose the shim pack(gaskets between the fan and gov. housing) and reinstall it, the gears won't howl.

I guess the only "Noisy" Fan-Shafts I have heard on OLDER Non-Power-Steering JD's was from the Front Fan-Shaft Bearing needing Greased...

Now, that can be one hard one for some people to diagnose..you would swear the noise is in the Governor...

If the shim gaskets are bad, which I'm guessing they will rip or be brittle and break in half like most gaskets I've dealt with. Can they be purchased as a set of just those or do I have to buy a complete governor overhaul gasket set?

The shims could be purchased separately. If they break apart, mic the shim pack and put together a new pack with those measurements.

Suggest before you open it up, check how much gear lash exists between the governor gear & the fan shaft gear. Just because it doesn't howl "as is" does not mean it isn't already way loose and deserving of some adjustment attention. No time like the present.

To be honest I have never open up a governor, or removed a fan shaft for the fear I have after some of the horror stories I have been told about working on governors. Are they really that bad? Especially in this case when I wiggle the fan shaft there is probably an 1/8 to 1/4'' play back and forth, is it worth diving into?
