B Farmall Plow

A young fellow in my neck of the woods has a model 32 JD Plow he wants to use at plow days next month with his B Farmall. I am certain he would do better with a Little Genius Plow. Did they come in a one bottom ,and if not, what plow would you suggest for her> Chuck Machinist

The B Farmall has such a wide stance that a conventional trailer plow would need to be pulled from off center to the right on the loop drawbar. I have attached a source
(i think) for a B mounted plow, and the image you see here of a double plow to allow plowing back down the same furrow the other way, one bottom at a time. Jim

I have a single bottom plow that came with my 1947 BN. Used it just once to plow a furrow to divert rain and snow melt water from the back of my yard. That must have been on the early 1980's or even before. It did and still does the job keeping the water away.

plow, Is that just a part number? Now if that is a 52 plow it will work just

Depends a lot on the wet dry conditions ,soil ,clay loam sandy-loam, gravel . What they can pull. 2-12 6 inches deep . Un scoured plow pulls very hard. Worn shares wont go not the ground ,with too much land .
Chilled iron plow clean up quick er than steel. Moldboards jd might have chilled iron on it that would be a plus if in good condition.
Hard to say a lot to consider .
Whats everybody using around that area.? If any are left.
Really need more info .
Also be sure to clean and grease cam lifter on mechanical plow , be able to make lever adjustment s.
Some good old books on old plows and plowing .

An IH Little Genius will always pull easier than a John Deere plow, but single bottom #8 Trailer Plows (Little Genius) are fairly rare.

I had one, but I sold it this past spring. I pulled it with my Farmall B, don't let anybody tell you that you can't. The key is to figure out where the center of pull needs to be and hitch it there. It will be on the right hand side of the drawbar, not the center.

This is not like trying to find a Dearborn 2 bottom plow for an 8N. Let him bring the JD plow as he most likely is not going to
find anything else on short notice. Advise him to work on the pair at his place if possible in terms of hitching,
raising/lowering, pulling, and establishing depth. He can always be searching for an IH plow that would have been sold for a B
back in the day between now and next year. You don't see that stuff laying around so it will take a while most likely.

I agree ,if they got a good John Deere plow use it . Get the horizontal and vertical draft set up for the B ,it will do a nice job.
Not set right its going to be a nightmare with any plow made .


Example , I use Allis Chalmers plows behind Farmall C , I think they are great . What your familiar with .

Depending on the ground type and condition an IHC plow set at 2 / 12 inch max., [any type loam, rex or Ace ] will pull well.
I have an IHC Farmell BN late 1946 with a 123 engine rebuild, that I pull a 2 furrow two wheel lift now on rubber ( was 1/2steel)
[ no tail wheel just a long land side]. Under most conditions I can pull in either 2nd or 3rd // unless in clay then 1st,
all at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle.
Therefore //if he could find a 2 furrow IHC plow and recondition it [ install better coulters, points, even rebuild wheel bearings and any
other loose or worn parts [ I have re done mine to near factory specks] is will do a grand job in competition for him.

With your BN you DO NOT have the problem he would have with his B and that is the extra wide wheel spacing for cultivating 2 40 inch corn rows and that difference in wheel spacing will affect his traction having to hook so far to right on the drawbar. And then you have a proper size plow in the 2-12 inch size While he is looking at a 2-14 inch size that will pull harder. He would never get an Oliver plow to hitch to that B tractor due to style of hitch.

Those wheels can be narrowed even on the B by dishing the wheel centers and switching the tires like we did on the old Fords and Fergusons.

They have the plow. They have the tractor. Let them have fun.

A little genius might "do better" (whatever that means) but the Deere plow will "do something," and besides, it's a plow day. Perfection is not the goal. Mostly you're just rooting up the ground and making a mess.

the four inches is no big deal as i have pulled 2-12 Little Genius with both power is not the problem but traction sure is
