B Starting issues

Hoping someone can give me some advise on My B. I put a new mag on it because the impulse coupling on the old mag went bad. I reset the timing per the manual (mag clicks at TDC in inspection window) When the engine is cold it will fire right off most times I spin the crank (hand start) when its warm I can crank till I get pooped. Any suggestions? Please help

Do you choke her when she's cold? On my B, the compression is just under 100psi on 2 cylinders (gonna rebuild next year)...so I have to choke her for two cranks even when hot, then she fires right off.

My B has a similar problem, it's also a hand crank model. I found that shutting off the gas and running the carb dry seemed to help. Otherwise I either wait for it to cool or grab a chain and tow it 3'.

On mine it is hard to start when the manifold is hot. I use the touch test. If I can touch the manifold it should start. The other thing I do is choke for 2 or 3 revolutions and then no choke for 2 or 3.
Hope this helps.

Very common problem on hand crank tractors. Things like hot manifolds and such cause one to start different then when cold. So you need to learn just what your tractor needs to start them when warm. Some times you need to choke them some times you need to turn the gas off. My JD-B can be easy at times and other times you about die trying to start it

That usually happens when there are several people standing around and you have just mentioned how great it starts. These old things do have ears I believe.

yes i choke when cold....It will usually fire off on the first crank....I can shut it off, it will restart 10 times in a row or more...then if I get the engine hot I crank till the cows come home...and they have been gone for years and doubt there coming back.

For some reason I don't have that problem. I think it is because I have made sure all deep cavitys in my carburetor are clean as well ans to make sure that the compression is up. That means good ring seal and valve seal. I have never bought a used running Allis B or C therefore I first installed a kit or installed new rings on freshly honed sleeves that were bore checked with the rings hand filed. I also rebuilt the heads.
When you have a good hot spark, a clean properly adjusted carburetor and good compression I have found them to start hot or cold. Most do have to be choked differently and it is a learning thing.

Two thoughts...
1. Try 2 or 3 revolutions with it choked while hot and see if she pops. But not more than that cause they flood quick when hot.
2. The mag you got might have a weak coil. Weaker coils lose fire when hot. It's one of the first signs a coil is going bad...the engine misses when hot or is very hard to start when hot.

has the motor ever died when hot ? If the coil in the mag or the condenser is breaking down when hot, then you will have a problem when hot running also, not just hot start. Do you loose power when hot ? Possibly the valve clearance is too tight.... If it is only a hot start problem, but you hear it fire sometimes.. the guys may be right about gas/ choke settings. Electric start makes it easy !
