i have a 42 b that i wanted to tighten up the steering on. it has a good 3/4 in of slop up and down. i tried running the nut up on the shaft and giving it a few whacks with a hand maul. no luck. heated it up with osebud and tried again. am i on the right track or is there some secret i need to know

What do you mean by up and down slop ? Is the steering shaft worn on the support stand ? Or is the steering shaft bearings and other parts worn out inside the steering pedestal on the front of tractor ?

As long as the front tires are off the ground, a block of wood and a BFH are just about the best bet. Good luck!

the steering shaft will move the 3/4 inch up and down. worn parts in lower end. It engages the gears nicely when I have the tractor hoisted up. I"m hopeing that a new thrust washer @ bushing will tighten it up. finding parts may take some time. thanks
