B Transmission Countershaft

I am taking the transmission apart on my B and am in the process of taking out the countershaft. To do that you have to remove the nut on the left side. The manual shows a special spanner wrench to take the nut off. Do you have to make one of these or are they available somewhere? Also, whoever took it apart the last time used a chisel to take it off, so there is hardly anything left of the slots to put the tool into. I may try to find another nut at the salvage yard after I get this one off. Any suggestions? Roger

Make sure you unstake the flange from the splines and then take a punch and a hammer and tap it loose. Counterclockwise to loosen. Chances are it isn't that tight anymore after pounding around in there all these years.

Here are a couple of pictures of the tool I made to do this job on my '51 B.It is made from a couple of plumbing fittings and an old tire tool. I cut the notches out with a small cut-off wheel and then cleaned it all up with a file. Worked great for putting the new nut back on. I think I took the old one off with a punch as it was really mangled. I got the new one from Deere. I remember it being pricy. Don't know if they still carry it.

Mother Deere has that nut available for $$$$$$119.90. Maybe you can find one in a salvage yard. I think that nut also fits the 50 and maybe even 520, 530.

Kurt, Thanks for the picture. I was looking at 2" and 2 1/2" pipe, but one was too small and the other too big. I never thought of using a coupling as that should be the correct diameter. I will buy one and make one like yours. Thanks. Roger

I think a wrench for the front 4x4 hubs on an 1983 Chevy 1/2 ton is very close to fit that nut and only needs some fileing.
