B with an A carb

B n 60

New User
Have a 44 B handstart. The person who had it before me put the newer bigger block on and I guess decided it would be a good idea to put an A carb on instead of the dltx 67 it should have had. The carb had just been rebuilt and I just honed the clyinders and the valves look good, but when it starts it will only run for a few seconds then choke out. Any tips on adjusting the idle and load settings on the carb since its probably way too large? Any tips would be appreciated. (I know I should just get the correct carb but I haven't had much luck locating one for a decent price)

You should have DLTX 34 on your tractor. The DLTX 67 is for B201000 and up. Anyways, Try your idle 1 1/4 turns open and load 1 turn open, that should get you close. Searching the archives will bring up alot on troubleshooting your issue. Good luck

It has the bigger block on it (the one that originally was on the 201000 and up).

Will try those settings. Thanks.

I once bought a late model 201000 and up B that had an A carb. on it. Previous owner had alot of problems fouling spark plugs. I went over it and tuned it up and still had problems fouling but it did seem to run fine until it fouled.
Changed the carb. to one for a B and all was fine.
I'd be looking for a B carb. maybe someone will take yours on trade ? Got to be some A's with B carbs needing the right ones.

My '50 B has a 71 carb. I have rebuilt it and the rest of the tractor. I matched the inlet and outlet side of the carb and used "A" gaskets. The tractor starts , idles , throttles up and does great under load. An engine will only use what it needs , the carb doesn't "force feed" the engine. I have no fouling problems. The interior dimensions are only slightly larger than the 67. I also cleaned up and matched the intake so everything's a smooth flow without obstructions to puddle up any raw fuel under low rpm use. This thing will take off in 6th gear with throttle barely over idle and just bark a little louder and just flat take off! No hesitation or nuttin'! Trade it if you want. I wouldn't.

b-maniac, do you know roughly how many turns your idle and load needles are? i"m having a hard time getting mine tuned it.

Will have to go check in the morning, too late tonite. It would only be a starting point for you since there are varying factors from tractor to tractor that may affect this setting. You will probably find you have another problem contributing and mimmicking a carb problem. Will post back tomorrow.

The idle is out exactly 2 turns and the load is out 1 1/4 turns. Set your idle as follows: Turn load all the way in , start tractor and warm up , place throttle in full open position and turn idle screw out till it "lopes" or runs rough and then back in until it stumbles and then back out just enough to eliminate stumble. Load screw open 1 1/2 turns and hook up to a large truck or small plow and load it good and adjust screw out til black smoke and low power. now back in until it pops or stumbles and then out 1/2 turn until it pulls clean and fires evenly. Sometimes this method will make up for a small malfunction or air leak somewhere. Let us know how it turns out.
