b414 clutch trouble

Hi again folks,

lookin for more advice.

just started to develope a clutch issue.

b414 deisel

when i depress the clutch pedal i start to load up the engine a bit.
it shifts fine, and all gears work.
the pto clutch works fine also.

i am leaning towards bad pilot bearing.

what do you guys think.

cheers

mike

That can be the pilot bearing or the throw out bearing. Either one or both can cause that. I've seen the finger of a pressure plate eat off of the pressure plate by a bad throw out bearing

at this point, i guess i will be splitting the engine from the gearbox.

I will do a clutch job while its apart and throwout brg and pilot bearing.

is there anything else i should do while i have it apart?

where is the best place to buy clutch parts besides here, they dont ship to Canada.

should i look at reman or new, and is it possible to buy the clutch parts individually and re-assemble, or is this not feasible?

thanks
mike

I just checked, A&I parts lists B414 clutch parts if you have a dealer close to you. I have also used Diamond Tractor parts for Canadian shipping

Don't split the tractor yet. There is an inspection plate on those B series. The yoke holding the throw out disc may have come off its
moorings if the clips broke. There is no throwout bearing , only a polycarbon disc. Sometimes the linkeage gets worn and the yoke gets
crooked , not letting the clutch depress and release . Used parts are available at Ontario Used Tractor Parts , 519 523 4922.

A bad "pilot bearing" won't load your engine when you depress the clutch pedal

You either have a failed throwout bearing or a failed crankshaft main bearing thrust bearing flange.

ok i am confused now,
a couple of posts ago, i read that there wasnt a throwout bearing. just a friction disc???

i did a little more investigating my clutch problem last night.

i pulled the inspection cover off and had a look at the clutch, the only thing that looks suspicious is the plate that the throw out bearing contacts when depressing clutch pedal. It appears to be wobbling and not running true. i am not sure if this is a problem or not.
And the throwout bearing does not spin freely when the clutch is not depressed, i thought it would.

i also noticed that when the clutch pedal was pushed all the way down to disengage pto, that the load on the engine increased somewhat more than when disengaging engine.

i am hoping that this may help in any diagnosis that any of you may have to offer.

thanks
mike

Hi all,

another update.

i had my son depress the clutch pedal while i was underneath watching the operation of the clutch with the engine running and tranny in neutral.

the throw out bearing doesnt spin at all when it makes contact with the plate that it pushes on.

in my experience, this bearing should spin, or am i way off base.

I believe the throw out bearing is shot and i think i know why.

While watching my son depress the pedal, i noticed that it didnt return to the position that i thought it should.

The return spring is not pulling the pedal back up far enought to completely disengage the throw out bearing, and i believe probably lead to over heating the bearing and its failure.

Sooooooo, next question.
while i have the unit split apart, is it a no-brainer to change out the clutch/throw out bearing/pilot bearing etc?

thanks
mike
