B414 only run with choke

I bought an old b414 that needed some work, first thing I did was drop the oil, drain the fuel put a new fuel filter on, the wiring was bad so We re-wired the tractor so it s starts off the key now. put a new regulator and resistor. Tractor will start and run at 1/4 choke but will eventually stall. If I take choke all the way off it will start backfiring and stall. What should my next step be? Check fuel pump, distributor, carb?

I was trying to find numbers on the distributor but the tag is hard to see. what I can see on the distributor is, 1407588. 1082
The last 8 could be a "B" it s hard to tell, any experts know what kind it is so I can get a replacement cap if needed?

also When re-wired the tractor we took the old wires out most wires weren t connected.
On the panel there s a red light and a green light, what are these for? I m guessing the red one is oil pressure light?

I know nothing about a B 414, but if it runs better or longer with partial choke then my first step would be to pull carb and clean it out real good!

First thing I would do is see what kind of gas flow you have. Old tractors can have a lot of junk in the gas tank. I would pull the plug in the carb and see what kind of stream you get. Catch it in a can and
wait a minute or so. You should get a steady stream if there are no issues to the carb. If you have a fuel problem before the carb you should be down to only a trickle in a few seconds. Try that and get back
to us as that will either confirm or eliminate one possible problem.

This is what I ll do when I get to the tractor, stupid question when I pull the plug will I turn the tractor over or have it running and look for the stream or will it just flow?

Hello Kyle welcome to YT! Just incase this is a hot
project the info Charlie M gave you does not exactly
apply to your tractor. Your tractor is a bit of an oddball
in the IH realm with it having a downdraft carb that is
above the intake manifold. Most IHs have a updraft
carb that sets below the intake manifold and the
air/fuel mix is drawn up into the intake manifold.
Charlie assumed this is what you have and on most of
those setups the fuel just flows by gravity to the carb
that sets lower beside the engine. In your case it has a
fuel pump to pump the gas up to the carb. Here is a

I didn't know any tractors after a F14 had a down draft carb. Sometimes it amazes me what IH did or didn't do on more modern tractors.

Thanks! My carb is up higher and isn t gravity fed, that s why I was kinda wondering if I had to be turning it over or have it running to check to see if the fuel is coming out.

The fuel stream after the fuel pump will flow in pulses
as the engine cranks. An internal lever on the fuel
pump moves back and forth following an eccentric on
the camshaft. It should deliver 2-4 tablespoons or a
little under a 1/4 cup on each pulse. The main thing at
this point is to just make sure it is not just barely a
trickle. If it has good flow to the carb then of course
there is a problem in the carb. And you unfortunately
that carb is quite a bit more complex then the normal
Farmall carb. Send me an email and I will provide you
with some helpful documentation for doing repairs on
that machine.

Check the filter in the fuel pump, make sure you
have good gravity flow to fuel pump, and look inside
all the banjo bolts for hidden restrictions.
