Recently acquired a B414 gas tractor ans slowly getting to know the ins and outs. Is there a secret to engaging the pto lever without the grinding?

Push the clutch pedal all the way down. It's not independent PTO. The tractor has a 2-stage main clutch. Push the pedal halfway down to stop the tractor, push it all the way down to stop/engage/disengage the PTO

That is a slow and deliberate process. The dogs are cut considerably wider on the coupler than most other tractors. It's worth it to run a full clutch adjust procedure, along with lubricating the cross shaft.

Im guessing youre experiencing the dogs butting together, and when you try to feather the clutch to line them up, the powered shaft just takes off before the dogs can be engaged, resulting in grind.

Sometimes it works if you use light, two finger pressure on the PTO lever right after you step on the clutch, as the clutch shaft is slowing down.

You're best bet though, is lubrication, so you can control that touchy clutch. Just light pressure on the lever and you can feel it drop into engagement as you slowly turn the clutch shaft.

You don't say whether it's live PTO , the non-live tractors are generally easier since you have the weight of the tractor to help control clutch action.
