Back working on the 861

So my son and I did an oil change this afternoon. When we went to replace the oil in the oil bath it was real runny and smelled like gas. How does gas get in the air cleaner? She sure seems to idle a lot better since we vented the gas cap. Need to change the rest of the fluids and get the old girl on food plot duty this summer

Sometimes the engine will diesel after being turned off and then when it finally expires will turn backwards and pump combustion gasses thru the carb and back thru the air cleaner, contaminating the oil in the cleaner. Usually will blow some oil vapor our the air intake located on the hood and exhibit oil on the sheet metal. A tune-up may help things. Idling the tractor before shutting off helps. Gasoline isn't what it used to be either. I've got a 961 which is bad for this and I've not been able to sort it out to improve. I have other tractors with this same engine which seldom have any issue. Dunno.

Extended cranking before starting can result in liquid gasoline in the intake manifold. If it ever backfires when the gas is in the intake, it can send some of the gas backwards through the air tube into the air cleaner.
