Would a badly leaking manifold gasket cause a tractor to backfire
or does it have to do more with the carb maybe being too rich? I
have a 53 JD 60 allfuel that I am running on gas and the manifold
gaskets are so bad that you can see clear thru them on the right
side. Finally got it started and the gas tank and carb cleaned and
trying to move forward. I got the gaskets on order so hopefully I
will have that done by next week.
Thanks

A bad vacuum leak can indeed cause a backfire.

If shes running too rich you will see an excess of black smoke out the exhaust.

If you replace the manifold gasket, make sure that BOTH the head and manifold surfaces where the two mate is flat n smooth n even and NOT all pitted out or a new gasket could burn out also.

Too lean is the most common cause of a backfire. The air leak causes an extreme lean condition.
