Backhoe lift cylinder

I need to rebuild the boom lift cylinder on my Ford 550 backhoe and the end cap is way larger than any pipe wrench I have. And I don"t want to buy a spanner wrench for this one job, so what method do you use to get the cap off?

Thanks,
Sid

Since you don"t want to buy the spanner wrench, you probably wouldn"t want to buy the torque wrench either. Better to take it in to a hydraulic shop to have rebuilt. the extreme high torque values needed take a large wrench.

why not buy an adjustable spanner and you will be able to use it in other applications. Snap-On has them and some of the bearing stores sell an OTC brand that works very well. I have a lot of tools I don't use often but I have them. next time you are on a snap on truck ask the price of a 5" socket on 11/2 inch drive. I have used mine about 5 time is the past 5 years!

Before I bought my set of 1/2" and 3/4" drive adjustable spanners, I made one to find a cyl. on my 655A. I took a piece of 1/2" plate and cut a slot to clear the rod. Drilled two holes, and sized a couple of pins(out of metric bolts) to fit tightly. With a long pipe handle it still wouldn't come loose! So I heated it. Still no movement! So I gave up and had a Ford guy stop by with his tools. It practically fell apart!! So I just needed to try it one more time, after it cooled down !!

Lots of cylinders resealed at my place and when the Mickey Mouse spanners from Snap-On and OTC that bends or breaks when a cheater bar is used we use a heavy duty chain wrench, leave the cylinder on the machine until you get the gland nut loose, close the cylinder as much as you can, most people can"t get gland nuts undone because they take the cylinder off and unless you have a cylinder bench that will hold the barrel solid while you undo the nut,the barrel held solid is the key,its no good at all having it in a rickety vice thats moving with the force of your movement its like twisting a bit of rubber, the chain wrench will undo it regardless of how tight it is providing its held solid, some time back a parts manual I had for the Ford 550 in PDF format was uploaded for one of the other guys to a host site,is still there and anyone of you guys that may want a copy of it are welcome to download it,its at the link below, when the first page opens choose the Free option and go from there.
