Backup cameraI

I am thinking of getting a back up camera for my 2008 Dodge Dakota. Where does one start to sift out the grain from the chaff, so to speak, in terms of features needed, powered vs. cordless, etc.

All a matter of preference. Be aware that some that are called “wireless” are only partially wireless. They still need the camera part wired to power. Others are truely wiress with a rechargable camera. The advantage is, you can put them anywhere you want vs wired into the tail lights. I’ve even put mine on my camper license plate so I can see traffic behind the camper. I can put the same camera in my bed to hook up a gooseneck.

I use a Garmin BC40 camera with a Garmin Drive 61 GPS unit. No wires, two AA lithium ion batteries in the camera last about four months.

In 2018 I bought and installed a cheap($39) Chinese rear camera in my Silverado I bought from Amazon, it's still working. The only downside is, it operates on 2.4hz, the crowded wireless phone frequency. So if I'm in a congested area, the camera goes in/out.

I'm quite happy with this unit:

Granted I don't use it as a fixed backup camera on my truck since it has its own, but I have two cameras for the system, one mounted up on the back of my camper and the other with the mag mount. The cameras are wireless, have a big internal rechargable battery with a very long standby time (months) and wake up remotely from the monitor. Digital HD transmission, not SD analog, good clear pictures. The monitor will show either of two cameras or put both up side by side. I've used the mag camera stuck on the back of the truck above the window for a better view hitching 5th or gooseneck, stuck to the side of the camper on the water heater door for a better blind side view when backing into a space and I've used the mag stuck to some big stuff I was moving with my backhoe that entirely blocked my view and the camera was the only way to see where I was going. Would be nicer if the monitor was also rechargeable battery, but minor inconvenience there.

I was about to say something smart azz about how we got away without these things ever since Henry Ford rolled his first car off the line........................

Then it occurred to me. As I get older, I tend to rely on K'kins to back me up to hook a trailer. K'kins is a dear soul, the love of my life.............but she tends to get a bit dramatic when guiding me. STOP! THIS WAY!(with accompanying hand gestures), PULL UP!!.................................................

The end result, although I never tell her............is that it takes twice as long to hook a trailer, than it would, if I just walked back, and took a look for myself. This is the highest form of love.

So.............a backup camera might not be such a bad thing I guess.

It is scary watching in the grocery parking lot here in central Florida.
Grey hairs do not need no young whipper snapper do dad like a backup camera!
Instead, when backing out of a parking spot they look straight ahead and very very slowly creep in reverse.
Relying on someone slapping their car or beeping their horn in time to stop.
Otherwise, they continue to roll out of the parking spot.
While a crowd gathers waiting for them to complete the manuver and proceed forward out of the lot.

I can remember the back up camera of the 70’s and 80’s.
A trailer hitch on the front bumper.

I’ve hooked tens of thousands of trailers up over my lifetime and never owned a back up camera.
I know like when you hear the ball mount smack the trailer you know it's time to stop! Me too! Anyway.

Kind of what I call the "granny ease over lane change" Where rather than checking for overtaking vehicles she just gradually eases over hoping that there is no one coming.
