Bad Solenoid?

Went to start 8n yesterday. It is 12 volt. Clicked a couple of times like a dead battery. Battery has full charge. PO had rigged key switch to toggle switch to start. I have replaced toggle with heavy duty starter button. This is the way I have it. Hot wire to key switch. Other side of key switch to resistor to points. And wire to starter button. Starter button to solenoid. I can push starter button and get 12 volts to solenoid. But nothing happens. I can jumper wire between big studs on solenoid and it will crank and run. Thanks.

Is it the correct 3 wire 2 big one small post solenoid?? If it is they work by grounding the small wire so if you ground that wire does it turn over??? Make sure it is out of gear by the way

Doggy.......surprizingly enuff, most starter solenoids are bullet proof. Unfortunately, DPO's are not. Some DPO's seem to think that because they have changed to 12V, the original 3-terminal 6V solenoid will crapppp out; not so. And interestingly enuff, most 12V solenoid's are 4-terminal and consist of 3-circuit types. NONE are readily compatible with the original 3-terminal 6V starter solenoid which is operated by the BIG starter neutral SAFETY button by the tranny shifter. And as you have described yer starter solenoid circuit, it will NEVER work 'cuz you gotta GROUND the little middle starter terminal with the BIG starter safety neutral switch by the tranny shifter. Its the LAW. There is 'nuttin' wrong with using a 2-terminal (SPST) toggle switch to provide electricity to yer sparkie coil.

You do realize that there is 'nuttin' common between the starter motor circuit (solenoid) and the sparkie circuit 'cept the common BATTERY.

Iff'n I hadda make a WAG about yer sputterin' solenoid, yer BIG battery clamps have INTERNAL corrosion that is NOT FIXXABLE. Bottom line, Replace yer 12V battery cable to the solenoid with 'arry-chested 'mercum maid double-ought (00) thick as yer thumb battery cable. NOT wimpy ferrin maid 6-ga 12V cable.

Dell........a 12V advocate for the right reasons who knows 8-ways to convert to 12V and they all work the first time

Dam near fell outta my chair...well said!!

dogt,
Looks like the fellows have you straightened out on the solenoid.
I'll just mention the philosophy of the thing. Good and bad has a moral implication which inanimate objects can not have, You have a nonfunctioning solenoid not a bad one. I'm sure you understand...

Old!
You da man. I disconnected wire from key switch to starter button. Then ran to ground the wire from button. Other wire from button to solenoid. Bang. Fire in the hole. Don't know why it crapped out to begin with. Maybe connections corroded. I cleaned all connections. I know just enough about wiring to get me in trouble. Its all better now. Thanks all.
Ultradog. Sorry bout my redneck way of describing my "bad solenoid". Thats just the way we talk down here in Texas. lol.

you really should hook the safety interlocked starter switch back up.. otherwise you may start it in gear accidentally.

Thanks soundguy. I always make sure any manual shift transmission is in neutral before startup. Just second nature. :)

I'm sure you do.. but will someone else using your tractor? just mentioning it as it was the original safety feature...
