Bad starter button?

After getting it running nicely, I parked it and when i went to re-start it I got nothing. I can see the ammeter move when I turn on the ignition switch so I am assuming that switch is good. However, I noticed that the whole starter button assembly is able to turn in the shifter plate. There is one wire off of it so I assume it has to ground to the cover somehow? Is there a way to bypass it to check? How hard is it to replace? The starter solenoid doesn't click so am I working on a good assumption at the moment?

Very simple either take the wire off the starter button and ground it some place or take a wire from the ground side of the battery and jump it to the wire on the starter button but be sure it is out of gear plus to double check make sure your problem isn't that your still in a gear

Did both. Nothing. In looking at the schematic in the FO-4 it should have operated the solenoid and the starter should have turned. I also quickly jumped across both side of solenoid and the starter turned. Am I correct in assuming a bad starter solenoid?

Yes in that case good chance the solenoid is bad. Be sure you get the correct solenoid because there are a number of them that look the same but aren't

Rats! Guess my 3 day weekend just opened up....:)
Just replaced mine last week - 8N,side,6v - with the 12v unit from this site. Simple job except for the somewhat inaccessible 2nd screw. Disconnect battery - to avoid nasty surprises if you short out the cables! My old one was still functional - just needed occasional percussive encouragement YMMV :)

Dan and Rachel Gingel show how to replace the starter button on one of their videos where they convert 8N from 6 volt to 12. I was going to remove the shifter plate on mine today to replace the gasket which I thought I had purchased from this site but turns out I did not order it. A new one is on the way now.

Just an update: got the gasket replaced no sweat.
