Baler follow up

Awhile back I asked for opinions and advice comparing an IH 440 baler which Id been using a few years with a new to me NH 565. The resulting replies were pretty much spot on. So here’s the score. 440- 1400 +- , 1 miss. 565, 950 +- no misses. That’s not counting when my crummy knot between the twine balls didn’t make it through. 440 smoother feeding, hay flows through steadier. 565 , nicer, straighter bale, shakes the tractor more, follows a pickup down the road better. Couldn’t tell you which one I like better. Guess I’ll keep them both and use the one I feel like that day. Appreciate the input from everyone who chimed in. Lotta knowledge here.

Other than the misses, that's pretty much the same opinions my Dad had on the IH vs. New Holland. The IH balers we had just couldn't be made to tie bales reliably.

I loaded behind an old 46 I think it was baler doing straw for a neighbor one time and if it was a wee bit tough it would not tie and you could not crowd it for windrow or it would not tie. I thought after that most anything other than an IH baler would be better.

We used a 46 baler with thrower for several years with no tieing problems. But when we bought it the plunger assembly had been replaced, Steel slides welded on the plunger (NH) baler used wood slides and if those slided got worn it would not tie so I think that was the problem with the 46 that the plunger slides were worn and instead of cutting the old off and welding on new they just replaced the entire plunger. The Nh 66 would not tie if thoe slides got worn, replace ant tieing problems stoped. The NH was replaced as it did not have a thower on it.

There is a HUGE difference between the 440 All Twine balers and older IH balers. The earliest 430/440 balers had the older knotters on them (less than a year) then IH came out with the All Twine knotter. Some of them were retrofitted on older 37/47 balers and the earliest 430/440 balers, A much better knotter than the old IH knotters. Once the all twine is dialed in they work and will keep working with minimal adjustment. We had a 1976 model(?) baler and that thing had 10s of thousands of bales run through it every year without issue though it took a couple years to get someone that knew what they were doing to set everything.

For some reason IH always could make a wire tie baler work. I had a worn out 47 wire tie that I used for several years. Worked great right up until the main drive lost a bearing and the baler lost time. I couldn't get the races off and had no idea how to retime that baler. For 4 years the biggest issue I had been to get the splices right between rolls of wire. Paid a "real" baler guy to fix it and it came back working like a sewing machine. Used it 3 more years and all I did was grease it.
