Ball joint style fast hitch

Was this the original fast hitch ???? I am looking for one to replace a fast hitch that has the sway eliminator attached to the left side. IH salvage yard ........or any one know of one for sale ????

There were three main "generations" of hitch.

1. Manual depth control. You see these on the Super C, 200, 300, 400. These are the ones with the "ball joints." On the 300 and 400 there is a separate cylinder on the front to control the pitch of the entire hitch for depth control. The Super C and 200 use the cultivator lift under the gas tank for this.

2. Mechanical traction control. You see these on the 230, 350, 450, 240, 340, 460, 560 and IIRC the 504. These are the type with the sway limiter on the one side. There is a loop handle on the left side of the tractor platform with a notched range of motion that lets you increase or decrease the traction control action of the hitch.

3. Hydraulic draft control. You see these on tractors from 1963 on except for the 504, 06 series, 56 series, 66 series, even some 86 series (retrofit, I have a picture of one). These use the same torsion bar hydraulic draft control system as the 3pt hitch that these tractors could come equipped with.

The #1 and #2 styles could be interchanged between tractors of the same frame size. #3 only fits tractors that would have come with #3 style from the factory, or are close enough in design (the hitch/hydraulic systems remained essentially unchanged from the 06 through the second-to-last year of the 86 series).

I got the Blue Ribbon Service book, for Fast-Hitch with traction control. It's number is GSS-1040, it covers from the 230-450 Farmall tractors, including 300 and 350 utility tractors. The lateral limiters is on the left side,But the only time they recomend the hitch to be rigid is when Middle busting,or with a Rear mount cultivator, and Drawbar! It was printed 7-10-57. Nothing mentioned in the about ball joint's but the term, hitch bail, and bail bracket bell crank, is !

Tractor is a 450....I had a 450 25 yrs ago that ball joint style.... So they are interchangeable ??????

Probably if you have all the parts!! I believe the first generation 400 Fast hitch had a boss cast into the transmission cover (platform) that anchored the front of a lift lever for that generation Fast hitch. Great hitch, probably needs the trans cover to work. Jim

Yes if you have the complete hitch, If the 450 rear light is mounted in the original location you need to move it. If just the steel sway straps are bad on the other hitch they can be made.

3. Hydraulic draft control. You see these on tractors from 1963 on except for the 504, 06 series, 56 series, 66 series, even some 86 series (retrofit, I have a picture of one). Hello BarnyardEngineering. I'm not tracking you on what you mean about the 3 point hitch here. I am looking for a mid size tractor with 3 point to pull a mower, blade, etc. Been watching a 706 and similar tractors at auctions. Not sure if you are saying a 706 and 04, 06, 56, and 66 has it or not. I had a 460 once that had this 2 point hitch that could be raised and lowered but didn't have top link. Not sure if that was called hydraulic draft control or not. Thanks for a clarification.

Thank you all for the info.......asked on another site and not one reply......realized Yesterdays Tractors was the place to go !!!!

Jan....this tractor does have handle to adjust draft control on back right corner of platform.
