Barn door hinges

I'm building some new barn doors. The doors are 57" wide and 103" tall. Made out of sawmill 1x8's poplar and 2x6's. I only have a 6x6 on either side to anchor the hinges to. Where is a good place to get a heavy duty hinge? I've looked several places online and locally but have not had any luck. I don't care for a fancy looking hinge just something that is going to work and last. Thanks Chris

Quarter-inch thick steel plate, and 3/8 inch ID seamless pipe, welded HM hinges. Also makes great motor mounts for larger motors. Easy to make.

Those will be heavy doors. If you want something to hold up all the weight, why not try gate hinge. Fasten door to hinges with carriage bolts instead of screws and Fasten hinge to side posts with lag screws.

Not sure but I think TSC has this big, also possibly Menards. Know they have some large ones.

Interesting... so the 1/4 plate would be where a motor would mount on and the pipe would be welded to one edge. Shaft, welded to another plate, would go through the pipe and allow the motor to pivot away from frame... tensioning the belts up????
Is this is what you mean? I would really like to see a picture or better explaination.

Thanks, always looking for better ways to hook motors up to equipment.

I"m a thousand miles from home so can"t send a pic, but you"re on the right track. The pipe is cut into short pieces, so 2-3 can be welded onto each steel plate in an alternating pattern. Then the rod slides through all pipes, and you have a hinge. Similar to the hinge on your house doors, just heavier. For a motor mount, weld a flat strip on the back end of the plate, and use "pull" bolts that go to the rear motor mounting bolts. Easy to adjust to even tension and alignment.

I think I get it and like that idea.
One of the things I make are impeller lift pumps. I use 12" pipe up to a 4' steel box frame with plywood sides. These pumps typically lift the water 6-8'. There is no pressure just volume used to fill ditches / reservoirs.
We use 5-30 hp electric motors with a tripple sheave to reduce the vertical impeller speed to about 250 rpm. I've used various tensioning configurations to hang the motors... but this is a great idea and will use it the next one i build.
Thanks for the idea. Grant

I buy the pipe from the local welding shop. When I say "seamless"- may not be the correct term, but it has no weld seam inside the pipe...so you can use a full size rod on the inside. Makes it more stable. Also has a heavier wall thickness for more strength. Water pipe has thinner wall. My mount materials are 1/4 inch thick or more. Assemble pipes, rod, flat stock and clamp down before welding....makes for perfect alignment. Just don"t weld adjacent pipes on the same side! BTDT Let everything cool before removing clamps.

After doing some more thinking and looking. I think I may do something similar to this caseman. I found some gate mounts that are basically all-thread and some straps that I can mount to the doors using bolts. The more I looked at the regular style hinges I just don't think they will hold these doors. I know they will become lighter as they dry more but that isn't going to work if I mount them with a regular style hinge. Then they pull the screws out of the 6x6 the first time I open the door. Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll try to post some pictures when I get the up in the next few days. Thanks Chris
