So you have a generator off of an 8N, take the Negative cable off the battery put your ohm meter on that cable and ground, see a reading at the starter switch remove the cable from the starter switch, if no reading then check the white wire that was with it, get a reading there then follow that wire to find the problem.

It's original cutout so, assume 6v positive?
Going to check wire to chassis voltage today.

I do have to ask did the wires all ohm out without cross feeding like a shorted wire in the middle of the harness may have had a bare spot in it so one could cross feed in the harness under the covering. Stranger thins happen. All that would nee to be done to check is put leads on to different color wirs in the harness and if you a connect they are dead shorted in the harness.

The cut out took some heat but works ohms good pressedI only have one white wire going to generator to fld on regulator, the wire on cut out is yellow but photo looks white, which did you mean, the start switch tested good, but there's no voltage anywhere on chassis found? I'm not understanding the path its arcing from on tractor.

That is your "starter switch", NOT a "cutout".
Times 3!
You have a voltage regulator it takes the place of the original cut out. A cut out works on an all or nothing principle. With a cut out your generator is at full charge rate or none. A regulator can reduce the charge rate and match the amperage the system and battery need to maintain the proper voltage level. Sometimes guys on here reply with nefarious answers, I have to admit I have been guilty on occasion and admit it and say I’m sorry. Some plow forward with no acknowledgment.
Are the ammeter mounting studs buggered up, and no longer insulating ground from power?
How about this request on the ammeter studs? The bridge that holds the gauge in is likely metallic. I am counting on “soaked” being real knowledgeable on these Fords seeing the material looks metallic. Where the ammeter studs go through the bridge those penetrations have to be insulated or the will short to ground on the dash. This could come on from an unintended bump from the battery.

When I enlarge the picture, it looks like the clamp bridge might be a plastic or nylon. An answer to the question will easily clear that possibility up.

That's not a cut out, that's the starter switch.

Okay, I'll check ammeter out , I did twist it a couple times checking wires. It's an old one, I have another ammeter.
The terminals are cleaned up on it

Yeah, my mistake. Just a contact switch.

Thanks used red MN for correcting my mistake!:)

I was not suggesting that what you said was a mistake. I was only saying that you had more experience looking at things behind a dash on an N tractor so I felt your concern was legitimate. Jim.ME did suggest it looks like plastic and I agree with that. As long as we are all helping him go in the same direction to fix his tractor it is all good! (y)

I understand, and like reading your posts:) Im not very gifted at creative writing, and can take a long time to chose/compose words that comunicate the thought. Think dyslexic at writing.

If Jim recognizes it might be non metal, I believe him.

Pulled ammeter off it is all plastic and rubber washers but I just broke off the needle. My other ammeter is metal so, don't want to use it.
