Battery box question

I snapped this pic of a 48 b battery box . It has the centerline . My 48 b does not have this mark . I thought the centerline boxes came later am i wrong ?

I didn't think the centerline slot came along 'til the 50 & 60 models came out. I've been wrong before, but that's how I remember them.

Good call Stan. Now that they are stamping using one die, newer repros are sometimes getting "upgraded" styling.

I am not 100% sure on this, but I have seen original '51 A's with the centerline slot and possibly even some 50's. I have an original '49 A and it does not have the slot. I am not sure if the 648,000 serial number break is when they started the slot but it would be close to there. Mike

Obviously, what I mentioned pertains to the A's and not the B's. But odds are the time frame would be similar unless a large stock of non-slotted boxes would have been on hand which would have delayed the introduction of boxes with the slots. Mike

Frank,

Thanks for the comeback...bet you're glad you're not up in the midwest these days, eh?

We have relatives coming from Iowa to cool off in a couple days.

I am 99% sure that is a repro or Possible
J/Deere replacement box. The Model 80 W/O
float ride & Pony start use's the same box
as B would have. I know of 4 LATE LATE LATE
Model B's in my area & None have a Center
Line Box. All have the orginal Box & all 4
are in extreamly Fine Orginal Condition. One
Man has a Early 80, with a Box Identical to
one pictured.

I just checked, my 1950 "B" does not have the slot but my '51 "B" and my '52 "A" both have the slot in the original battery box.

It's been pretty hot here in Tallahassee, but boy oh boy, we have been getting regular rain, 2"+ today. I have to mow every five days or the 6' deck on the 855 struggles. Had the 70D and the chipper out today. Still fun to run that one. Today an old fellow stopped and stood at the fance and was watching. I went over and he said he was at a neighbors house and hear it popping, and just had to come over and see it in action. He even took pictures. Kind of choked me up.
