Battery box

No. The 300/350/400/450 has Ih stamped on the back. The 53 SM and SMTA is plane on the back of the box. The light is on the left on the SM and SMTA and is on the right on the 400. I can't remember which side the light is on the 450. Other then that there the same.

On the sm/smta box it has a threaded boss for a peice of 1/2" pipe to mount the light on a 400/450 it is a bracket that is bolted to the box. On a smd the battery cable comes out of the upper portion of box on 400/450 it comes out on the lower portion by deck plate. A sm box also has 2 tabs that come of the rear sides of box and secure it to deckplate bolts the 400 doesn't have the 2 tabs.

The Super M had two different battery boxes. Early versions had the battery box located under the gas tank, same as a regular M. Later versions had the battery box located under the seat.

As far as "will fit" the battery box under the seat, one from a 400 or 450 will bolt in place, and the Super M battery box will fit on a 400 or 450. They won't be "correct" for the reasons stated above, but they will fit. The boxes aren't cheap, so if you're looking to save money by fitting the "wrong" box for some reason and don't care if it's 100% "correct" then go ahead.

For under seat boxes no one now makes one exactly like a original, unless they started recently. Some are close looking at the outside. Aftermarket has made all kinds from fit all to close. Some had holes all over with a opening in top and bottom for battery cable. Original SM box had battery cable hole at top and seat base had a cutout there. 300 through 450 seat base will pinch or be close to battery cable when used on a SM box. Light mount was a 1/2 inch pipe opening. Think IH did sell a SM replacement box with bolt on light bracket later on. No imprint on box like 400 and 450. Straps on box rear sides mounted to SM transmission top cover bolts. 400-450 mounted at rear with bolts inside box into holes in top cover not found on a SM. SM had mounting holes on right side for remote control rear hose brackets. Don't think any aftermarket has those. Also don't think any made with battery hold down hardware holes on inside.

Based on responses below I'm still a little confused. Here is why I ask. My battery box which is rusted out and I plan to replace has the large imprint IH on the back yet the only boxes I can purchase for Super M don't. The 300 and above do. Based on post below maybe mine wasn't supposed to have the IH. Maybe someone replaced with 300-400 box. And mine does have the two tabs on the rear also.

So did any of the Super M have large IH on back of box? If this is not a SM box then seems like I could go back with one like this. I sure do like the IH. So much so if I can't get a box with it I plan to cut this out of my old one and weld neatly to a new box.

Thanks Guys.

Ok, I thought I was pretty clear that the boxes WILL FIT, but are not "correct."

Super M/MTA: No IH logo
400/450: Yes IH logo

If you put a box with an IH logo on your Super M and take it to a tractor show, the "correct police" will be sneering at you and your tractor the entire time. Other than that, no problem.

By the way, your plan to transplant the logo will probably be the least expensive route, because the boxes with the IH logos are significantly more expensive than the plain boxes.

Thanks Barnyard

Yea I just wanted to make sure. Couldn't figure out how I ended up with wrong box. But I do like it and they are about same price on EBay.

As for the era police. It may see a show or two but I figure I see it all the time and besides since I've only had it 6 months
,mine did come with the stamped one. Had one when I got it. Maybe just not in 52.

My next question probably going to be about this odd front end I have. Now wondering what it came from.
