I used a stihl brand battery unit. I was impressed. Not enough to sell my gas trimmer, but it wasn't bad. It also works with other attachments like blower and hedge trimer

We have one for my wife who is chronically challenged when it comes to pull starting anything.
She thinks its great! I have used it a time or two and found it to be a pretty good tool. Not in the same class as my dual string gas powered straight shaft trimmer but it does a good job for what it is.

We have a Ryobi, it worked real well with the original battery, which looked like an AGM. When the battery failed after 6-7 years it was going to be very costly for an original so I put a common depth finder battery in it. It works OK but does not last nearly as long, but the battery only cost $20.

I have no experience with battery powered weed eaters but have used many other cordless tools. 90% of the problems I have experienced with cordless tools were short battery life and battery not taking a full charge. Based on that,I settled on 12 volt rather than 18 and 24 so I can fabricate a cord to allow running off truck,UTV and tractor battery. Not a great arangement but the good tools stay in the shop and truck so having the repurposed drill,spotlight and saw in the UTV box is handy for small chores when I run across them unexpectedly. I am watching for a quility 12 volt weed eater in a garage sale and expect to use it quite often to tidy up here and there. Mail box post,driveway enterance and fishing pond specificly.
As far as what brands are best,most that have good long standing reputations are safe bets. Most tradesmen and homeowners that own several tools try to have same battery fit them all.

Nancy 3 or 4 years ago I bought a 24 volt weed eater brand from Wally world. It has a built in battery and is well balanced. It holds a charge well, I was beginning to wonder about that. It stopped taking a real good charge. Last week, I left it plugged in all night, now it is all right. I gave away all the gas ones I have accumilated.

Wife has had a Black & Decker with two batteries for a couple of years. I used it for the first time this week. It worked good but batt did not last long enough for me. She couldn't handle or start a gas trimmer. She can take this one to the cemetery and trim up without me. I have several 2 cycle and one 4 cycle trimmers. Depends on what you want to do with them.

Home Depot sells a Ryobi 40 volt that really cuts
like a small gas weed eater, they also sell a clipper and chainsaw. 40 volt models aren't cheap but they don't require any up keep, just a place to plug in the charger. I try to avoid anything that uses gas the ethanol gas we have now causes to many problems, I buy diesel or battery powered only.

I have one of the B&D 20 volt lithium jobs from Lowes. Came with a blower and two batteries. Battery lasted long enough to trim around 40 trees probably 20 minutes. Sure is not a brush trimmer but works real well at what it is designed for.
For some reason my wrists and hands can"t handle the vibration from gas machines any more so this is it. I am happy for what it is.

Use a good additive like sea foam or startron in the gas and no problemo.
I use additive in ALL my "can" gas.

lways trouble with small single cylinder gasoline engines that sit unused with fuel in carb. Propane is always fresh & starts easy after the winter.

I got a B&D 'Grass Hawg' and it does what little my Husky wheeled string trimmer can't handle (delicate stuff where a little too close would spark the second war of North vs. South). Overall, I'm happy with it for the money.
