I always use car/truck batteries for tractors IF I can get as many or more cold cranking amps.

There are tall batteries that will touch the metal hood, short out and cause a fire... And there are short batteries that work just fine... Do not put a tall battery in there. Also expect to have to run a longer battery cable as one of the post will now be further away and the old cable will not reach... Unless of course you run it sideways out of the hood,, where then the hood vibrations will cause the edge of the hood to cut into the battery cable and burn down the tractor. There is a reason the cables are run back and in front of the fuel tank and not out the side of the hood.

Have pretty much the same setup in all 4 of my thousand series tractors.
Group 65. Last one I bought was $89 at Rural King this past February to replace a 4DLT in a 3000. Got a group 65 in a 5000 that's 7 years old now, not bad for a battery in a tractor.
Please note the rubber flap over top of the positive terminal. The battery is a little taller than a 4DLT, but still clears the hood. The flap is a little extra precaution.
While you've got your cables unhooked, check your positive for chafing where it runs behind the fuel tank.
Been a few instances where the insulation rubs off, the cable grounds against the tank, and...it's not good.
I'd put a piece of hose over the cable for protection, or at least multiple wraps of electrical tape.

Whatever fits and has enough CCA will work. I went to replace the 17TF a couple of years ago and they were near $300, so I went to WM. You'll need some kind of filler to keep the hold down in place.

I run group 65 batteries in my 3000 and 2810 diesels and have had no problems.
