Batteryminder plus Mod 12117 dead

jniolon

old and in the way
I've got two of these and keep one on my hobby truck battery to keep it topped off

After a drive yesterday I hooked it up (with a voltmeter attached) and it shows zero output. Took it to the bench and tested...same results.

I keep a spare and tried it and it's dead too ??"??? tried two different meters, checked for ac at the outlet 120 volt there... checked the meters on another battery and they work...

checked continuity across primary 3 ohms secondary 43 ohms and both leads show continuity from case to connector at the the of the wire I'm baffled

odd that two would die together...Battery charger gurus !!! anything serviceable inside ?? we've had a couple of power outages lately but can't see that killing a transformer...ideas??

thanks

john

If they are electronic float chargers you
won't ''see'' any output voltage from
them ''on the bench'', when connected to
a ''healthy'' battery (after a delay)
they will cycle on and off to keep the
battery to topped off without
overcharging it. It's unclear to me if
you have connected them to a good battery
and monitored the voltage after some time
has passed?

My battery tender has a red light when charging and a green light
when the battery is charged, Red light will flash if the battery is bad.

Like wore out said, hook the charger to a good battery and monitor it for an hour to see if the voltage rises. Most battery maintainers have circuitry to protect against hooking them up backwards or to a bad battery. They won't start charging until they've detected a battery.

Good morning John, Those type chargers vary in price, quality, voltage regulation and control schemes, so
hard to say from here what's going on especially if NOT hooked to a battery or what they are designed to
see. I agree with the other fine gents, I would measure the battery voltage at rest and stabilized, then
connect the charger, give it some time, and monitor what the battery voltage eventually does. Depending on
the charger and battery state and condition, I would expect it to EVENTUALLY rise to at least the 13 volt or
more range IF THE CHARGER IS WORKING AND BATTERY IS OKAY OTHER THAN BEING LOW ??

I just bought half a dozen of that type off ebay for about 7 bucks apiece with free shipping. After having some battery problems recently, I started investigating what my batteries are doing. All of them self discharge faster than you could imagine....at least faster than I imagined. So I got out the sevral that I already had and bought more to cover all the batteries. With the cost of new batteries on today's market it was the thing to do.....advice on how to save money......... keep them charged.

On performance, the pure maintainers only put out about an amp. max. If you hook one to a battery and monitor the voltage for a few minutes, you can see the voltage rise.......0.001 volt at a time. Over time it will pump your battery up over 13v.

all of ya'll are right and I even knew that yo9u had to have a load on it to show voltage... I hate it when I forget that I know something

thanks all for reminding me...hooked it up today and all is well..
