''A head-on crash between a transit van and a combine near Egeland, ND has led to the death of a 39-year-old man from Stewart, MS.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, at approximately 3:12 p.m. on Monday, November 13, a combine with a header (driven by a 72-year-old man from Devils Lake) was traveling westbound on ND 66 near Egeland, and a Ford Transit van was traveling eastbound.

Suddenly, the Ford struck the part of the combine header that was present in the eastbound lane. Both the van and combine were then immobilized on the roadway.

The driver of the combine was unharmed, but the driver of the Ford the man from Stewart was fatally injured.''

A lot of combines can cover an entire road without a header, anymore.

I can relate to this. Several years ago, I topped a hill a mile from my house and was suddenly confronted by a combine that covered the entire road. I got stopped, but it was scary.

I'd be more in favor of a law requiring a vehicle traveling ahead of the combine to warn oncoming traffic.

sad case with fatality. technically the combine operator would be at fault.

no matter what you're driving, a VW bug or a house down the road, you can NOT cross the center line. if you cannot proceed without crossing the centerline and there is traffic in the other lane you must pull over and wait for traffic to clear. yeah it would suck driving like that but you have no right to be in the other lane of traffic.

around here there are a lot of doublewide manufactured houses built. those guys are on the road as soon as its officially sun rise even though it may still be dark out. THey never yeild to oncoming traffic. often their flag cars will pull into oncoming traffic to stop traffic so the house can turn onto the road. the house pullers also rarely stop at stopsigns and their flag cars run them right behind them. they are a different breed.

a couple years ago a oversize/wide truck was running at night and hit a car oncoming and killed the driver and maybe the passenger as well as they could not see the load hanging over the line.

drive with headers on.

No need for any new law. It has been illegal to operate to left of center since way before I got my license. I doubt that the fine is very much, but when you add causing a crash that makes it more serious. Add death resulting most likely means major jail time.

(quoted from post at 11:02:09 11/15/23) A lot of heads now are 30 and 50 ft .
For sure and they do travel on the roads here. Of course we don't get the crazy high speed traffic that some of you get down South. If I'm on the road in wide machinery I want a pilot vehicle with radio contact so I don't get any surprises.

Be careful what you wish for.

You start regulating farm machinery on the road and one day you'll wake up and all the onerous DOT rules will apply to farmers too.

Story is that the head involved is a 45'.

No doubt trying to sneak from one field to the next without dismounting the header. If you're out in the middle of nowhere Montana like the Welkers where you go hours without seeing a car on the road, no big deal.

You gotta use your head.

The base width of most modern equipment is more than a single lane. NYS Troopers could ticket a farmer on that alone. On that
basis we don't need anymore laws concerning farm equipment. The farmer in question gambled and lost. I would not dream of doing
that around here since any road I use is on the way to a mall or casino. Plenty of people who have a license and vehicle but
should have neither based on their abilities. An ambulance heading to a traffic accident is a once per week happening anymore. I
feel for the farmer but he took a chance that he should not have done.

When I used to work for implement dealers moving wide loads, we said there was two kinds of people.
The one on would take you on and almost force you in the ditch. The other was scared to death of you
and would almost drive in the opposite ditch.
And those were only 10-12 ft wide loads.

Egeland, ND is arguably more in the middle of nowhere than the Welker s are. And it is not illegal to move oversize farm equipment on the road here in ND.

Regardless, it is an unfortunate incident that will change multiple lives forever.

And yes, it would be best practice to remove the head when traveling on a state highway.

(quoted from post at 17:27:59 11/15/23) A folding header would have been much cheaper than that lawsuit will cost.
es Sir & he best have been carrying great liability insurance.
