Bearing Splitter

I'm working on that 301 for our 560 IH and we are tearing into it to check it out, don't want to come back later and have to tear into it.
The manual calls for a bearing splitter for pulling the harmonic balance and all that stuff. I, nor my dad has ever heard of a "Bearing Splitter". Any one have any advice or pictures. Thanks

It is a device that is split in half and has two pieces of threaded rod through both sections at the outside edges. You loosen the nuts on the treaded rod and put the splitter behind the balancer or bearing, sleeve what ever you are trying to remove and it gives you an area to afix your bearing puller to so that you may apply pullin pressure to the back of said object. They come in different sizes depending on the size of the object.

Bearing buster is a slang use for it in some places.

some auto parts stores rent them. I bought one @ harbor freight that has worked for me. also, you will need a large enough puller to hook-up to splitter plate holes. its tempting to try a 3 arm hook type puller, but you can break things.

You may need to make or have this made like Bigdog did for his Cub. You still would need that bearing splitter. Hal

let me clear up my statement about bearing splitter ''I bought one @ harbor freight & it works for me'' i meant as in using for a pulling plate behind pully, etc. I fully agree, its not worth a flip for "splitting bearings' as in forcing thin edge in behind bearing & tightening force bolts. edge will just roll up. I have larger OTC, but bought a couple of HF. for jobs like this. make sure you get tapped holes in it-not all have them. Just didn't want to mislead. Paul
