BEARING TOOL

Good Morning,

Does anybody know if its doable to remove crank shift bearings with out pulling the engine in an 8N tractor, using a bearing tool that ford made (2P5518). This was for removing, and installing crank shift bearings without pulling the engine. I saw my father do this on an old ford truck when I was a kid (I'm over 60 now), this was about 1962.

Thank You All

Mike,

All of the rod bearing can be changed without pulling the crank. I think most of the main bearing can be, except the rear main. I think that will be a challenge (best I remember when I rebuilt mine 8 years ago).

Many times I have changed the mains on lots of engines by putting a brass rivet in the crankshaft oil hole and then turn the engine so that the bearing shell tab comes out first. Just gently rotate the crank by hand till the old shell comes out then start the new one in and gently rotate the crank till it is almost flush then use a wooden or plastic piece to push it homw flush with the block

It's best to loosen all the main bolts before you start to remove any of them so the crand will drop down just a bit.

You can use a nail, stick in hole and roll out the brg by turning the crank. grind off the nail head so it is thinner than the brg.
They used to have these in shops made from aluminum.

The thrust will roll out easy also.

yes, with all main caps loose, I use
a wooden paint stick to get them moving.
It's about the right thickness and won't hurt metal.
(the paint stick will flex and follow the shell in a
little...don't go too far and break it)
once they move an inch
no-slip gloves and press/pull with thumbs and roll it out.
roll the new one in with lots of assembly lube and
use the paint stick again to seat it in the right place.
Usually all I need, sometimes the thrust bearing will require a nudge with
the nail setup.
ya, I go thru a lot of paint sticks, but they are no-scratch and free
