Continental Belton mower deck it's blowing grease out of the vent hole is the plug on the lower portion of that a drain plug or is that a level plug where the grease should be even though it's at that level it's still blowing grease out the vent hole where would the identification tag be on this unit or is it stamped somewhere it's running hot

Might have some moisture in the oil and that is pushing the oil out, take that rear cover off and clean the gearbox out, then refill with some newer synthetic gear oil, the additives help with the heat. Or just use what you have and try that.

How much free play should there be between the gears and that gearbox is right now there's probably more than a quarter of an inch of slack and I'm thinking that might be why it's overheating and blowing out Grease

Yeah. Odds are it should not have "grease" but heavy gear oil. The seal on the output shaft probably failed from wear and tear so a previous owner filled it with gun grease. Now the wear and tear has gotten to the point where the gearbox is overheating and throwing the grease out.

It may behoove you to look into a replacement gearbox if the rest of the mower is in good shape. Odds are replacement parts are not available and/or those parts cost more than the machine is worth. Replacement gearboxes are generic and relatively inexpensive, but may require some new holes to be drilled in the deck of the mower.

I pulled the PTO and found out where the .030 lash is coming from as you can see in the picture there's .030 ridge in the ring teeth with some moderate Spalding on the gear faces pinion gears appears to be okay although probably worn irrregularly I've always kept it greased and the original cap if you can see in the picture as a grease or that's what led me to believe grease is what it took
