Bendix Problem

Just bought a new starter with Bendix for the 9N. Took it out of the box, turned the bendix and it extended out and now won't retract. If I install it that way it appears that the pinion will never retract off of the ring gear. Only has less than 1/4" of travel now. What happened?

Rick.........ya hadda fooler'round ditja??? Go ahead and install it ennyways. Then hitter with wirebrush wheel on yer grinder. Hi-speed brush will withdraw Bendix screw. Iff'n it don't when holding left-to-right then turnner round so its right-to-left. Simple, eh?

Others say you can install yer starter motor with Bendix extended and when yer engine starts will un-screw yer Bendix. dunnno. .......Dell

I've had a couple like that. Just installed the starter and it retracted after the first start. I was not able to retract it with a wire brush.

I want you to know that you are the first person in the world to ever do this... 8^)

I think just about everyone who pulls the starter extends the bendix the first time. They are more careful the next time. Install it as is or use the wire wheel technique. And you can smile when the next guy posts that they have extended the bendix.

Thanks. I installed it as is and she spun right over. Now onto rebuilding the carb, then hopefully fire her up sometime tonight.

As an aside, I was looking for a brush hog and found one on Craigslist. Drove out to the place this morning to pick it up and to my pleasant surprise there were 8Ns, 9Ns and Jubilees parked all over! This fellow turns out to have a Ford N tractor repair business! Now I have a local place for parts!

My grass cutting arsenal now includes a Howse 5' brush hog, a Carini 5' finish mower, both in great shape, as well as a beat up 5' Woods finish mower.
