Best Engine Overhaul Kit

Thought I d ask what everyone has been using and satisfied with in recent years in terms of overhaul kits. My H block is completely stripped and ready for new innards. Which kit comes best recommended? I ve seen some from Tisco, Abilene Machine, Reliance and other unbranded kits. Seems like the Case IH dealers are selling the same kits these days.

I hope to do this rebuild once, so I don t mind spending a little extra upfront for a good kit.

Thanks!

I have 4 engines in the shop right now for rebuilds. We use Reliance exclusively. I have been a Reliance dealer for several years and never had a problem with their engine parts. We also use their clutch kits. We are finishing a Massey 175 and a John Deere 1520 this week.

I don't buy kits except for gaskets. The block, crank, head and cam go to the machine shop. They inspect measure and machine. Then and only then do we know what we need. They are buying bearings, pistons, and rings everyday, some for odd ball stuff, so they know where to get the best quality at the best price. So I can buy through them cheaper than at parts stores. Last year I rebuilt a fifty year old odd ball motor. The most recognized vendor for that car was getting $150 apiece for the pistons. My machine shop found the sought after and rarely available domed pistons for me for $190 for four.

Since you $eem to be willing to do thi$ "right", I'm just wondering if you've had the crankshaft professionally checked and ground or polished, as needed, had the "line bore" checked, and the rods checked for "straightness" and "twist", and the
big end and small end checked and reworked as needed?

NO use obsessing over a "kit" unless all that and more has been done.

Appreciate the advice, but YES, the block, head, crank, cam and rods have all been dropped off at my machine shop for a full inspection. Trying to do all of this right the first time!

GOOD JOB! There's SO many posts on here from guys doing "repair" jobs that are destined to fail because they refuse to bring in some professional help with some of the components.

Consult them about a good source of parts, as well.

Is this a stand-alone shop, or are they associated with a parts store?

I will definitely ask them for some suggestions as well, but I wanted to at least go in with some knowledge beforehand. It is a machine shop attached to an automotive parts store, so I m sure they could provide something in the way of parts I need.
