Best plow behind 4010

My son wants to get a plow for his 4010. My uncle has an old Oliver round beam semi mount plow that is a 4-16. We found a three point hitch John Deere 4-16 with a steel wheel in the back and a rubber gauge wheel on the side. I have plowed with the oliver plow but I have never plowed with a fully mounted three point hitch 4 bottom plow. Which would be better for the 4010?

4010 being rather lightweight for the HP, I would get a fully mounted to get all the weight I can on that 3 point hitch. If it is a rollover 4-16, there is no way that a 4010 lifts it, but it will lift a non rollover plow.
Fully mounted is also a better plow for small patches and garden.

I plowed many acres when I was a kid with a 4010 diesel and a (JD) 4X16 semi mount plow. It worked very well other than being a 1960's plow with low beam clearance in heavy corn trash. There were all sorts of brand plow in the neighborhood back in the day and they all suffered from low beam clearance.

Each have advantages and also disadvantages..

Myself, I prefer a Semi-Mounted plow because when traveling on the road, etc it leaves all of the normal weight on the front wheels of the tractor when the plow is raised up and a Semi-Mounted plow should enter the ground progressively and leave a nice straight line across the field (subject to operator proficiency)..!!

The Fully Mounted plow of equal size will usually require additional Front weight to keep traveling on the road safer, but, that Fully-Mounted plow IS pretty handy for turning, Backing into corners, and plowing off the ends..
But..(!!), that Fully=Mounted plow enters the ground more or less "all 4 at once", so the furrows begin in a staggered (not even) way..

Nothing wrong with either plow, your preference ,,,

DO consider CONDITION above everything..A RUSTY or worn-out plow will cost plenty time (Labor) and $$ for new wearing parts..

Where are ya located.? I have an F-145 Semi-Mount that IS field-READY and that means, every wearing surface was covered with Grease, then Enamel paint to protect the Grease..
I am in Central Oh10..

You didn't say how much and what type of plowing you are going to do? Unless you are doing small plots I would certainly get a semi-mount plow. If you have hills I would suggest one with a side hill hitch.

Either plow will work behind a properly equipped 4010. You should be looking more at what you are plowing. Are you doing large fields or strips or gardens? Also, are you plowing a lot of trash or not so much.

A 3x16 rollover plow would be my choice but again, I don't know what your application is. I am also partial to the JD F145 plows, but if you are doing heavy corn stalks they would not be the correct plow, not enough clearance. Although setting up the coulters properly can help a lot. Some people say the Oliver plows pull easier. I don't have experience with them but I do know if a F145 is setup correctly they pull easy also.

Also, which plow can you get parts for?

Good luck.

I have used both Oliver and Deere plows. The Oliver will go in hard ground a little better than a Deere and pull easier. The Deere plows lays the ground over nicer than the Oliver. An F145 Deere 4 bottom semimount plow would be a nice match for your 4010. I do not like the Deere 4 bottom mounted as you need to move the rear wheels out fairly wide.I do have a three bottom fully mounted Deere plow that I like and a semimount as well. Tom

I had a 4010 with a 4040 piston set in it.i pulled a ford {oliver}4 x18 semi mounted plow with it. I had 4 jd wheel weights on each wheel. I was plowing clay loam soil 8 to 10" deep in 5th gear. I tried a jd 4 x 16 and it pulled as hard as the ford/oliver plow.that plow had clearance too.rented a farm that had weeds from setting idle a year .thick and tall.it covered them up and rare did it plug up
