shopping for rough cutter 5 or 6 foot . being advised that "woods" is the best you can buy. has anyone dealt with the kodiak company, for their bush hog products? any advice? tanks gary

The toughest rotary on the market, IMHO, was the JD 709. The 609 would be about the same. Today, the HX series Deere would be the equivalent. Woods makes a decent product, but I almost wish at times I hadn't sold my 709 when I got a bigger mower. So much so, I bought another JD (716?) last year at an auction.

what tractor do you have?

I have a to-35 ferguson
I once bought a 6ft tufline disc, best small disc heavy built disc I ever saw, reason I bought it.

but problem; it was so heavy that at the ends, I had to turn using my brakes as the front of the tractor was just dancing in the air.
but boy o boy was it a great disc.

I would thank you can also get to much weight in a small rotary cutter. my uncle had a 5 ft bush hog brand cutter, it was a great heavy duty machine.
very well built.

Gary, YOU Asked!,,, I would not buy a Woods Under ANY Circumstances At All.
In no particular order here....JD, Servis/Rhino, Bush Hog, Continental/Belton, Mohawk, Just about anyone but Woods.
I have a 52 yr old, 3pt, JD-227, I push 110 horses through it when it is being used....Any thing my 966 drives over it eats, period! It will still be going strong when a new Woods will be in the scrap yard headed to the smelter! for one example
Batwings my favorite is the SR-15 series Will take more punishment than what 10 Ave.farmers combined will dish out on a regular basis! I know for I have personally pushed one to that point asking it to do things it wasn't designed to do
I recently pickup a JD 1518 Bating that is one tough machine too.

I will say... if All you are going to do is shred down tall grass and weeds a Woods MAY stay together!, if you ask it to do more than that then I have my doubts!!
Remember You asked! Hope this helps

I bought a 296 Bush Hog last year and it has been great so far. I cut some pretty nasty stuff with it last fall without an issue. My brother has a six foot JD and it is just too light a model for anything bigger than grass and weeds. A heavier rated JD should be ok.

Determine how much mower your tractor can handle and buy the heaviest built model you can afford.

If you're out to buy the cheapest thing you can find... just about any make will have something for you... that will disappoint you.
Look at it this way. They've all got about 3 grades of cutter. A light duty, an intermediate duty and a HEAVY duty model in various widths. If you shop on the basis of heavy duty models than probably most will have something for you with a price nearly double what the cheap one is.
I just bought a Woods HC72 yesterday. It's sort of an intermediate duty model... 65 hp gearbox, somewhat rugged frame, etc. The heavy duty model would be the BB60 in the size you want... Smaller mower with the same gearbox and slip clutch shaft.
I'd suggest you simply look at the weight of the machine and the rating on the gearbox to make your decision... The rest of it is basically a pair of blades swinging on a disc mounted on a shaft. The color of the paint won't make it perform any better.
The only reasons I bought a Woods is because it was close to home and cheaper than the rest on a comparison basis.... not because I think anything great of Woods.

get a real Bush hog. nothing else comes close.Woods is good for grass Bush hog is good for grass and bushes will take abuse for decades.

thaks a million for yours and everyone else that replied. you guys really set me on the right track. thanks again to all.

I have 4 rotary cutters, 5'IMCO 3 point, 10' Howse pull type, 6' Woods pull type, and a new Woods Brush Bull 72.I like the Woods because they seem to pull easier as they have ample room above the blades also changing blades is easier because you only need a 3/4 inch wrench. Any one of them will cut heavier stuff than I want to run my tractor over.

About ten years ago I went to an auction that had 10 or 11 Woods batwings they used to mow the interstate. 9 of them had water contaminated oil in at least one gearbox.

I use is a hydr driven Davco 705 HD 5' cutter on the frontend loader,it'll outdo any other rotary cutter on the market,.. it'll cut and shred up to 6" dia trees.

They run Browns here in Georgia on right away mowing. We have lots of rocks and trees. They take the trailing wheel off of the back because they will not last long,
