best tractor

my neighbor in pa has many tractors and he also farms with another one of my neighbors and can use any of his tractors but this Oliver seems to be his favorite! I saw the post yesterday about worst tractor,so I thought I would give you his opinion on the best tractor!

I had a Oliver 66 for a few years. I liked most things about it except two things.

Winey transmission and that goofy brake setup.

Best tractor I have ever run is my MX200.

Very user friendly. You steer with your left hand while going form forward to reverse with your left fingers.

With the right hand you can run the trottle as you shift gears with your thumb. Move your right hand 4 inches and run all the hydraulics with your fingers.

Then there's the air ride swivel seat that allows you to watch the machine without cramping your neck near as far with all the controls turning with the seat.

what is an mx 200?

Larry it is a CIH tractor that is 10 years old or so. They would run 65-85K depending on the condition. Not a real good comparison to your pictures. If I gave that much for a tractor then it better be nice.

I liked the old Olivers too they just where fun to drive and worked well. Just did not have the company behind them to prosper.

I've been a JD fan for most of my years- I grew up on them and have four that I use today. I'm not predjudiced, either- I also have an old 806. But I still have a special place in me for the Super 88 diesel an old friend had back when I was a kid. They were and are still the smoothest sounding tractor on the farm. Darn things just hummed. Cliff had one that would plow all day, or even bale hay, and all I remeber is that hum that they put out. They didn't drive too bad either, but I always had a fit with the hi-lo shift. I never have gotten that right...

Everybody has a fave, and of course it depends upon the size of the job you are doing, as well as what type of job. For the smaller stuff we do the handiest tractor we have (and both Dad and I profess it to be our favorite) is the Super C, but ya always seem to find Dad on the 2N and me on the JD B. For bigger stuff the JD 70 (god I wish it had power steering) for me and the Super M for Dad. All around for me I think the JD A is my favorite.
Those Oliver 6 cylinders sure sound nice, and they are a pretty tractor! Only knock I have heard on them is traction; Dad relates a story from when he was a teen working on his Uncle"s farm; They were in process of buying a new tractor and the dealer had dropped off an Oliver 77 for them to try, after a little plowing his Uncle said "we already have that Massey 44 that has no traction I guess we"ll send this back." He then bought a Farmall M. Maybe he should have demo"d a JD A if he really wanted traction?
At our last tractor club meeting, one of the members with a sweeeeeeet Super 88 Dsl. related that he bought it from a local farmer who bought it new, the farmer told him it"s a great tractor but maybe we should have spent more time trying it out because it doesn"t have very good traction.
That having been said, I know that when you get those Ollies weighted up good they pull like crazy even in the stock classes. I guess those pressed steel wheels that give ya lotsa flexibility at pulls weren"t really the Cat"s behind for real farming. One thing I do know: In Div I strictly stock pulls the only time I know for sure that I don"t stand a darn good chance of winning #3000, #3500, #4000, and #4500 is when i see someone rolling a Super 66 off their trailer!

Gary was right on the WHINE and the brake pedal setup.The whine you couldn't get rid of but I can't say how many Olivers had their brake pedal setup changed to a Normal setup after a accident or two.

My first tractor was an 8N Ford (same as I grew up with). Was trying to disk with it, and was complaining to the neighbor about how it was poundin' the puddin' out of me.

He said I needed to take his 77 diesel home and disk with it- wouldn't take no for an answer. Difference was night and day- have been an Oliver fan ever since.
