Sitting here thinking about your post below. I thought of something and it may be the answer to your next surprise find you were speaking of... My question is.. WHERE IS THE OIL PUMP PICK UP TUBE FOR THIS ENGINE?
There is NO possible way for you to get that big bolt out of the oil pan with the pan still bolted to the block, IF the pick up tube and cup are still attatched to the pump!!!!

Hi Lumpy, No possible way??
Maybe I dont understand your question. I unscrewed the big oil drain plug to drain the oil and the bolt fell out with the drain oil.
The oil pickup tube is in the usual place, why ask that???
 
He is probably asking that because if his oil pickup
tube and cup is in the same place as mine. There is
no room for that size bolt to get between the cup
and the oil pan. I would have to try it but I think
the cutout in the cup are even closed enough to
catch the bolt head. Stranger things have happened
but I understand lumpy and tackhammers point.
 
wishihadagreenthumb is right on with my thinking. The pick up tube on both of my "N" tractors is less than a 1/2" from touching the bottom of the pan. Look at yours and tell me what you think. 2nd of all, does your plug have a metal screen around it? It is suppose to. Look one up in the tractor parts section on this site. Its at the upper left of the screen. You will see what I mean when you see the picture.
