Black paper gasket material

I redid the gaskets on an I-4 (basically an H farmall engine). New gaskets, don't remember the supplier, might have been YT(they may all come from the same place anyway). The water jacket soon started leaking. I searched and found several people have had this trouble. The advice was not clean enough, pitted, warped, etc, etc! Welp, I'm thinking the gasket material is JUNK.i took it apart, gasket very well stuck to both surfaces, gasket was all mushy. Had the same trouble on a 400 thermostat housing. Made my own gasket out of different material no more leak. Anyone else having this issue?

That is a bit weird, but I do recall those gaskets being a little soft. Don't think they were to the point of mush.

What did you use for gasket sealant?

YEP vary common issue , The OLD gskt was CORK and the OLD way was #2 Permatex . And not to over tighten the nuts . Today , well ya now have to use on both side Dr. Black and allow it to semi set . ya don't need much a thing line around 1/8th to 3/16ths on both sides then set the water jacket on and LIGHTLY add pressuer to the nuts to give a genital squeeze and stop and allow it to semi cure then lightly snug it down . Your surfaces MUST BE SUPER CLEAN

I have used Indian head, copper coat spray and loctite SI 5900. I wish I woulda used the loctite by itself and thrown the gasket away. The loctite probably the best I've ever used, i have never been impressed with permatec blue, red, etc, etc. Loctite is NOT for a valve cover or sumpin ya need to take off to adjust. Some of the the new black paper/ thin cardboard gaskets seem to not work against coolant?

I can’t say I’ve had the problems with the gaskets I bought. (Not recently)
I don’t use sealer as a rule . Only use it on poor surface condition or warped . Prepare the surface as clean a ps possible and torque to spec.
Use your best judgment and procedures.
I did find this out, the thin oil pump cover gasket to thick, after market for Ih pumps . Sent back and got Ih.
