Block slot ?

Overhauling my 8N side mount dis. and ran into a question. At the back of the block just in front of the rope seal is a slot. It was full of grease and crude. There is nothing on the oil pan to match it. Don't recall ever seeing this before and nothing in the manual. Anyone know what it is and what its for?

Probably just a by product of making the block. It would allow someplace for oil coming out of bearing to go to.

ust not have a crankshaft? Look at place for crankshaft oil slinger to reside.
