Bone-jarring mowing

One of the areas I brush hog is about two acres of flat, but very bumpy, native woodland scattered with a half dozen trees. We've owned it for 30 years and have done nothing with it. I'm thinking I need to disc it in order to smooth it out. I have no disc and otherwise have no need for one. I can't find anyone to hire that does tractor work with anything but blades and mowers.

Is my only option to buy a used disc. And if so, what should I look for in a disc for an 8N?

I drag of some sort in the winter might do the job and you can build one out of a lot of junk you may have. Any thing you can drag around and will knock off the high spots and put them in the low is all you need. Reason I say in the winter is because that is when the grass is sort of dead and will not be as hard to stop you from doing hat you want

depends,on why its bumpy.if its bumpy because of navite grasses thats growing in clumps,discing probably wont smooth it out.and if your not using it its probably better left alone,since it needs the open spaces beween clumps to reseed itself.on the other hand if you do feel the need to change it, a n should handle a 6' lift type disc pretty good,and a 5' for sure.i use a 8' drag type myself that i bought at auction for $20.if your planning on removing the native grass,i would spray it with roundup,kill every thing,then plow and disc to make a seedbed for one of the sod forming grass that tend to be smoother.

ditto on a drag.. a different kind of harrow. will take longer.. but should work.

for a 3pt disc, a dual gaged one 6.5' or less for a 3pt and up to 8' on a drag /lift style.

the box frame are heavier and cut better ( cut better and are tougher ) than the angle iron framed ones.. but also heavier / harder to lift on the 3pt .

of course, most of the angle iron ones have a bracket to put concrete blocks on for extra weight.

also some have sealed bearings.. some not..

I doubt very much that a disk alone will do it. Not if the ground is THAT rough. A big, HEAVY disk, behind a BIG tractor might tear the ground up enough that it could then be disked smooth, but you gotta that soil loosened up 10 to 12 inches deep before you can do any kind of smoothing job.

eed to go back and re-read jackinok post. If there is vegetation of any significance (i.e., not 90% bare ground), then you will never get it smooth with a drag/harrow/etc. I have had to plow, disc, rake and remove the roots/top growth by baling, then disc and harrow/drag to smooth fields. A drag will just roll the roots/vegetation & not move dirt. That is a lot of experience speaking. Not what you want to hear, but the way it is.
