Boom Pole

A coworker bought a new tractor with a front end loader.
He mentioned he has a boom pole he was going to sell because he no longer needs it.
I asked him about it.
He agreed to give it to me for $50.
Seems like a good price.


So educate me.
Don't know the brand as I have not seen it yet but are these things useful ??????
Says he has removed a motor out of a car with it so it seems it should pick up decent weight.
I just understand the geometry of lifting and it seems picking up something that far off the back axle will make the front end of tractor light.

Items:
They are very handy for lifting within the limits of the material strength
They do remove front weight, but usually not radical if the choices are reasonable in what is lifted
They are a bit clumsy to store
Getting it put on can take 2 people, or a way to get it up and stable for the top link

My friend had one on the end of his loader on his 1250 Oliver. We used it to lift the trusses up on my pole barn when I built it. Worked good on 12ft. sidewalls lifting them up. His was shop built by him and was used more than once for that purpose. You wouldn't want to lift anything much heavier with it though.

If it is like what TSC or Rural King sells, they are easy to hook up to the three point.
One person managable.

I had one for my 51 8Ns. Was really handy for unloading my trailer. Sold it to a buddy of mine for $50. He uses it with his 9N. Didnt need it after I bought my J/D 5203 with FEL with hooks.

I bought one fromTSC several years ago. Comes in handy moving equipment around. I used it to pull the engine from my 8n recently.

John I used mine to pick up fence post, the 15 electric pole ( not powered) for my last camp, concrete steps , just anything buried except past max limit. That at limit is max that 3 pt of your tractor can lift minus the weight of the pole. Just watch front end for lift if you bite off too much. I I think my Kubota can lift something like 1500 # or close to that. $50 is a pretty decent price. Usually cost $180-$200 new for a good one.

They are handy as can be for moving equipment. Easy to hitch up. The only time I ever had a front end issue was when trying to lift a 3-53 Detroit power unit with my little JD M. Moving the hydraulic lever just raised the front of the tractor instead of the power unit. Even then I was able to raise one end and pull it to where it was needed with the pole. You won't regret buying it!

I have one on my Bobcat. Very handy. As others have said, use with in its limits.

I bought a cheapo and did not expect much for it. I paid $35 back about 50 years ago and after about 40 years took it to a consignment sale and about got my money back. right after I got it I loaded a 4 bottom plow lifting the front end of a JD 3020. It took a lot of abuse. Most homade ones are too heavy, This one was made by some training school in the South. It really did look cheap, but was very good. Buy it and you cannot lose money on it,

No more than picking up something too big with any loader will make the back end light.

Mine is a Ford model. It had a chart on it for what weight you could lift with three different Ford tractors. I had it on my 400 and tried to pull a root out of the ground. The front of the tractor came off the ground. It does have a few custom curves to it now.

I bought an almost new good quality one a few years ago. I have a front end loader on my tractor. Did you ever try dragging trees or brush hooked to the loader in reverse for long distance? Much easier to go forward.

I have 2. One is made from solid round stock, the other is pipe. I've broken both of them. They're very handy, but have limits.
