Bought another deere yesterday

Howdy folks,

Well, gonna have to build a bigger barn I guess. Good friend called me back this week to ask if I was still interested in a tractor that he needed to sell. I had made him an offer earlier. It wasn’t what he was asking but right now it is all that I can afford. He got back with me and agreed to my offer. Said he would rather see me with the tractor because he knew I would take care of it. It’s a 1953 John Deere R that is set up for rice work. Has all the shields for the axles and brakes plus the shorter wide rear wheels. It is not in good shape and will take lots of elbow grease and $$ to get restored but I’m looking forward to it. Plus it will be neat in the future to have a standard R setting side by side at shows with the latest addition to my collection. I already have a 1951 R.

The question I have is whether anyone has any pics of a restored R that is set up for rice work? I’d like to see one. I have old b&w pics from a two cylinder magazine that featured the R and I’ve seen some of the 830s and 820s set up for rice but no restored pics of an R set up that way. Is that 2 cyl. issue the one on rice? I thought that issue was very informative. By the way those darn old tractors have a way of following me home too.

Only difference is the axle and brake shields and the grease fitting in the end of the axle.
and the tires which most Rice R's I have seen had the 18-26" (23.1 x 26") or steel. many in this area also had the 7.50 X 18" Single rib front tires.
I bought a Rice R 4 years ago that had frozen and busted the block, head and bottom radiator tank. I took some of the quick steel putty and patched it all where it wouldnt leak and then ended up selling it in an auction, still kicking myself for selling it.

Here's a 52 that's pretty much original instead of restored. Belongs to my step father first one I ever got to drive. neat old tractor.

oooooh....i'd love to have an r. just a beast of a lookin tractor. also looking for a jd a.....maybe an allis g......too. got 11 red ones now, + one minnie....need a splash of color in there!!!!

No, the issue I have is specifically on the R. There is one pic in there of a rice model pulling a 2 shank ripper down south. I've never seen the issue on rice tractors. I'll have to snoop around ebay and see if I can snag one on there. That's where I got the issue I was talking about before. God bless.
