Brake drum removal problem

I am stuck trying to remove a brake drum from a Ford 640, preparatory to doing a brake overhaul.

I have turned the star wheel adjustment fully counter-clockwise and can get the drum to move roughly a 1/8 or 1/4-ich forward but at that point the drum seems to be binding against something and will not turn.

What should I do next to get the drum off? Is "get a bigger hammer" the answer?

Shoes are catching on the unworn, dirty, crusty ridge that exists around the inside perimeter of the drum. Pry bar between the drum and backing plate, BFHammer while applying modest pressure on the bar. Lubrication helps, you're going to clean everything anyway. Work it around and it will pop loose.

What Pomester posted. I have found that turning the drum while doing all of that seemed to make a big difference.

It could be a buildup of paint and rust where the axel and drum join. Clean with wire wheel down to bare metal.

Is the center hole in the drum loose on the hub?

I recently had a 4110 that I couldn't get the drum off one side. It was stuck on the hub, even a rose bud wouldn't get it to release. Finally drilled through the drum between opposing studs, tapped to 5/8 std,. with a bottoming tap, so that I could push against the axle flange. Worked great. The new drums came drilled and tapped.
