Brake Issues

The brakes on my "44 2N have stopped working. They used to bring it to a full stop, but after a summer of dis-use (while I figured out some problems with the electrical system), the brakes now barely slow it down.

I jacked it up and adjusted them per the manual (tightened them until the wheels wouldn"t move, then backed off a quarter turn so they moved with resistance), but when I lowered it back down, the pedal brakes weren"t any more effective (I tried the pedals while jacked, and they stopped the wheels from spinning).

There was a LOT of oiled-up dirt on the hubs (I cleaned out what I could for now). I read a leaky seal could cause this problem. Should I plan to take the brakes apart and clean them? If so, should I plan to replace any or all of the parts (including the shoes)?

lubricated brake shoes and drum rarely work good at stopping a tractor made fro dry brakes and drum :)

yep.. time to pul brakes and repalce.. and since that means pulling the axle too.. plan on putting sure seals in if you ALREADY are seeing leaks.

Soundguy is right...sure seals...I put them on my 2N ...the only accessory you need for install is a piece of 3" dia sched 40 pvc pipe to set the seals.
