Brake seals 46 H

Hello, I am looking at replacing the seals in my brakes. I had watched the Steiner tractor video on replacing them and thought it looked easy, so I took my brake drums off to find it didn't look like hers. I'm assuming it's just a difference in years. I'm no mechanic so I just need confirmation that there is still a seal in there... Attached is a picture of the right brake, same situation with the left.

The seal is on the outside of the recess it is placed in. Clean up the pinion carrier casting and brake area on the final drives. Use a slide hammer and a screw adapter (dent puller) to pull the seals. Drill small holes in the seal face and screw sheet metal screws into the seal to pull it. Be slow, going from side ot side to pull it evenly out. Putting the new seal in a position to touch a different spot on the drum hub will allow a better seal. Polish the hub with 400 grit going roundy round, not in and out. Jim

Do not take the housing loose, just pull the seal.

The outline of the seal is visible in your picture. There is a tool made with a hook to get behind the seal and a place to hit it with a hammer or do what Jim said. I think Harbor Freight has the tool.

Whatever you do, do NOT remove those six bolts holding the bull pinion carrier and try to remove it. You will find that it seems like it is stuck, then you will pry on it, then you will break it.

The big bull gear on the end of the axle is in the way, and that is what the bull pinion carrier catches on when you try to remove it. The only way to get the bull pinion carrier out is to remove the bull gear first.

It's a common mistake.

PLEASE pay attention to what Barnyard Engineering says. I thought it would be an easier job just to remove the brake seal cage and pound out the seals from the back side. I busted the seal cage and had to replace it. Some of you might remember this from my posts last winter. Ellis

i FOUND THAT A PVC bushing or piece of PVC pipe [I forget which] is perfect for tap-tap-tapping in the seal. Install it so the U faces inside, and it fills up with grease.
