brake shaft end play

New User
Working on new brakes and seals on a farmall m. I have the brake drums off, just finished installing new seals, and found that the brake shaft (bull pinion) on the left side has quite a bit of end play. Maybe 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Is this shaft supposed to float? I can see the outter bearing and it isnt moving, just the shaft is moving inside it. Does the brake drum go up against the bearing and take up some of this play? Any ideas? Thanks.
