Brake Stuck on Z

Is there an easy way to unstick a brake on a Z? The hub doesn't move. I have soaked it with penetrating oil as best I can. Thanks

I just re-read your post, so I am adding this: If its the shoes that are holding it:

No. No easy way.

What you can do is take something like a Dremel tool and cut the heads off the shoe retaining pins. (If you can get at them. I think you can, or cut them off with a chisel.) Unbolt the anchor pin. (At least I think you can get to it's nut on the inside of the back plate.) Take the (6?) bolts out of the drum. Then pry the whole shooting match off, drum, shoes and all.

Clean up and save what you can. replace the rest.

NAPA used to have a Maxi-kit that had the correct length reatining pins in it. But you have to find a parts guy that is willing to look in their PAPER catalogs.

When you put it back together, you want your weakest return spring to the front shoe and put the stronger spring to the rear shoe on last. It turns backward to normal direction on automobile brakes. You want the rear shoe to be last to contact the drum when going forward or else it will clatter, lock up, or some such. You can live with those problems easier in reverse because you are usually travelling slower.

Thank you! The old tractor has really straight tin, but one bad rear and a stuck engine as well. I am wondering how much effort I want to put into her..... The brake sounds do-able, so we'll work on it and see where we end up!

Thanks!

If I remember right there is a slot in the brake drum to check for clearance when setting up. If you are lucky and it happens to be in the right spot, you might be able to pry through that slot with a screw driver or hammer against the shoe with a small punch. That will only effect one shoe, but again if you are lucky it could be the worst one. Jack up the wheel and slam it back and forth.
