Brakes

Hi everyone. Quick question for you in re. to setting the brakes. I noticed on other JD tractors, that both brake arms are grooved/serrated so that they can be set while sitting in the seat. At least I think that. On my 1939 H, the arms are smooth. The only way I see to set them is from behind after leaving the seat. I see a lever that will hold the pedal in place. Is what I mention accurate?? I haven't tried reaching down there yet while still on the tractor, but I don't think it's possible. Too far?? I really don't know. I was looking for some provisions on the lever thinking maybe a rod of some type is missing, but didn't see anything. Is this the design of the brakes?? I don't see a constant need to set the brakes, but would just like to know the procedure. Thank you, Nicholas C.

Didn't the H just have a cam to flip over and lock the pedal on each side? It's been over 50 years since I worked for Deere dealer and I have just about forgotten what I had learned then.

I can't say but the set latches on the other letter series were a poor set up for setting brakes with the bar below the platform and no way to reach them either.

Yes, there is a cam to flip over on both sides. Problem is, I don't think it can be reached from the seat. That would be the ideal way for me to set the brakes. I would like to have secured the tractor before getting off of it, and walking behind, to engage the brakes. I'm sure it wouldn't be an everyday thing, but would like to have had that option. You can set the brakes from the seat on other JD's and I could do the same on a former Farmall I owned. No biggie. I was just wondering it I was missing something. Thanks, Carmine.

The cam type on the H are far better and easier to reach. The ones on my A are hard to teach because they flop below the platform. Are you sure someone didn't put them on backward. You just have to flip them over and step on the pedal.

I just came in from the garage and had to check setting the brakes again. I sat in the seat and tried to reach the cam/lever that locks the brakes. I'm 6'2 and have a decent reach but couldn't even come close to making contact with the cam. I left the seat and went to the rear of the tractor and could easily set the brakes. The cam seems to be in the proper position. I guess it's just the way it was designed and is going to stay, Nicholas C.

You have 8 posts so you should be able to post a photo of the brake lock you are talking about. I would think there would be a way to connect a rod to it to make it do what is needed while still seated. it easy on my phone. I think it is somewhat humorous that you owned a Farmall before and apparently needed minimal guidance on that machine. Now you have a Deere and here you are with questions. Ha ha just a light hearted poke at the green lovers.

My Farmall H ran real well. All of my vehicles should have run as well as that tractor did. A very simple tractor to me. Many farms that I worked on as a kid, had Farmall's, so I was somewhat familiar with them. I had it for several years and would go on long rides with it. Kind of therapeutic. Came a time when I wasn't driving it much anymore. Tires started cracking and needed replacement. Life in general was getting in the way, so I sold it. No regrets. I wouldn't necessarily rule out another one someday. It would have to have been restored and in the same condition my JD H is in.
As for pics, I'm not the least bit computer literate. I know enough to get around but that's it. I can always ask my wife for help, Nicholas C.
