brazing with mapp

I have some brazing to do tomorrow, and with the recent news of acetylene going to be scarce.. I'm reluctant to use up what I have. I already had to use some today to cut up some metal for a dog proog gate latch and jamb.

tomorrow I will need to do some brazing.

I have a mapp torch as well as the lil propane soldering torch for sweating pipes.. and of course I have my o/a bottles.. question.. will the mapp be suitable.. if memory serves me it burns at about 2600 or 2700'f with acetylene at around 3100 or 3200 or so.. I'm thinking the mapp will be good enough.. or do I need to squander my acetylene torch rig. already check the local gas pony / thouroughbred dealers where i can swap my tnaks and all are out locally.. so what acetylene I have left I'm kinda wanting to save.

i don't do very much brazing.. maybee 1-2x per year.. do a whole lot more soft and silver soldering and welding and cutting.. etc.. so I don't leave a dedicated torch on bottles setup up with a brazing tip..(once acetylene comes back in stock in?? a few months?? ) beginning to wonder if a spare set of #1 bottles in a lil tote rig would be worth while and just leave it setup or if that's just overkill...

opinions?

thanks

Soundguy try using propane and oxagen for your cuting and brazing thats what I use works good just need dif. tip in your cutting head. gages work on both 20# propane or acet.

Soundguy, I always use acetylene.....that was until helping a friend out at his place last month. He only uses propane (only thing he uses the setup for is cutting). I brazed a couple of things for him with that and it worked well.

Your acetelyne should go 4-1 with the o2 cylinder assuming you do some cutting. Should last a while. I done a fair amount of brazing with the disposable mapp gas cylinders, good stuff I don"t even buy propane for the hand torch.

yeah it does. I do mostly cutting and I get at least 2 to 2.5 bottles of o2 used per acetylene bottle.

the lil propane torch I have is just left over from a 2-tank pack with head that I picke dup about 5ys ago to do an emergency repair at a friends house on some copper pipes. took that long to use up the first bottle.. not I got another to go.. just never gets used much.. :)

I have a mapp bottle with the standard 'click and go' tip on it (that screws to the top of the bottle).

I've successfully brazed with it, but it takes a while to get hot enough - if your metal is thick, it might be too much of a heat sink.

You might try propane/o2 mix. Several years ago I was around where they were cutting up some old railroad cars, and tracks, and they never used acetylene at all, only propane/o2. They were burning railroad track like it was butter. Brazing should not be a problem, although not as hot as acetylene of course.

Propane is a great gas for both cutting and brazing use. Regulator is the same but torch requires a different tip for cutting and the orifice in the torch handle should be changed for optimum performance.

Use the tank off of your gas grill for the fuel (act), with your oxy/??? torch, you might just be surprised.

You will need a different tip for the torch for cutting use with propane.

Just the very end tip though....

we went to mapp gas at the steel plant i work at about 10 years ago, and to tell the truth i can"t even remeber accetylne & i have been there 37 years and welding & burning the whole time
mapp is fine for brazing, a little slower for cutting but you will be fine

Sure can. When I was in the Offshore Marine industry we used oxygen and propane for all torch applications. This stemmed from the economy of using propane in our salvage operations where we often cut up large ships and barges into 2' wide shearable strips. So much gas was used the cutting torches were connected to pallet mounted LOX tanks and 300# propanes. Propane is hotter burning, cheaper and a favorite choice of the scrap metal industry.

cool.. so even if I don't have a cutting tip to use for my torch.. i can use the brazing / welding tip and my hot dog gas tank.. :)

(quoted from post at 10:35:29 04/11/11) can I braze with oxy propane using my regular brazing tip ( not the cutting handle )?

soundguy

That is what I use.

In fact I use a whole different torch for soildering, or brazing, I use a small Smith for that.

I use a pretty large (it is 3 letters, for a name) for cutting, and I have a propane tip for it, I only use that torch for cutting.

when i can, I may get a hole other torch for brazing so I don't have to swap tips or bodies..

You should be able to use your current soldering/brazing/welding tips just fine with your oxy/propane torch.

cool beans.. so nothing more to buy. already got those tips, and a 20# bbq grill tank ( for the grill.. :) )

(quoted from post at 09:17:57 04/12/11) remember, propane alone is not as hot as acetylene (or anything) with O2

sucks about the guys at the UC plant

Sad to hear about that, but how does an explosion at one plant cause an acetylene shortage?
