During my factory work years every morning, and afternoon we had a 15 minute break, sometimes longer if there wasn't much work, and the BS was interesting they lasted longer. Working around the house, About mid morning I stop for coffee, not so much in the afternoon. Working on my tractor About the time I stop is when I am about too pee my pants. Stan

I know the feeling, damn fluid pills. 👨‍🌾

IU don't need fluid pills for that. If I sit at a desk I go every 1/2 hour. If i actually work ever 4 hours or so.

Didn’t know what a coffee break was until I was out of high school. Dad bought a dozer from a John Deere dealership. Part of the deal was for them to mount it on our tractor. Their lead time was out too far, so dad said what if I leave one of my boys (me) here to help mount the dozer? They agreed to get on it the next morning with my help. I showed up bright and early with the tractor and we got started. At 10AM I’m under the tractor pushing a bolt in a hole waiting for the JD employee to put the nut on. Waiting, waiting, waiting. So I say what’s the hold up? No answer. I ask again. Still no answer. So I crawl out and there is absolutely no one around. That is when I found out that work stops when the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 10. That never happened on our farm. Still don’t drink coffee.

Where I worked there was no "coffee break" only a ten-minute period morning and afternoon where you could smoke "at your workstation." I spent a couple of weeks setting up equipment we sold to a plant in Wausau. We were turning over a large lamination die, I turned to get an tool and when I turned back the die was hanging on the crane and everyone was gone. Break time and they didn't even bother to lower it to the floor. Really hot day and I worked past the shift change one afternoon. Went into the break room to get cold one and none of the vending machines would accept my quarters. A dude walked in and told me they were disabled outside of lunch and breaks. Gotta love the union shops.

Between 1978 to 1984 I was employed on ocean going cargo ships. The non-watching standing maintenance personnel worked 8-5. There was a scheduled coffee break at 10 and 3.

I have always found that folks that start working and keep hammering through run down faster and make more errors as they tire. Short breaks, I believe, allow you to reset your focus and ultimately get a better job. But that's just me.

I left a cannery field shop job (You took a break when, and if you had time) to a union, power company job. About a week after I got there, I got a visit from the Shop Steward, advising me that: If I didn't start going to the break room, and taking breaks, I would be referred to the Executive Board for discipline. Thank goodness, I was only in the main shop about a month, when I was asked to take one of the routes, to the more remote headquarters, where I set my own schedule. I had also been advised that I worked too fast, and was making the others look bad.🤪

While in college I was in the Laborers Union for several years. Worked for carpenters and bricklayers. Then worked on the Washington DC subway. I’ll never forget the old laborer on the subway who said to me “You gots to pace yourself”. In other words don’t work to hard.

Oddly, there may have been a different reason. Worker "never takes a break", then wants to be paid for the "additional time" worked because he "worked through his break(s)".

When I was working road construction at 17, one summer I was reprimanded twice by the foreman for working too hard. Then probably the last week before end of summer vacation I was reprimanded by the job "super" for working too slow.
