Briggs 13HP engine help.

My 13hp Briggs will at times fill the crank case with gas as it did during this past winter. (It happens a couple times a summer too? In order to fix this issue on a permanent basis can I install a inline 12 volt fuel pump and power it with the key switch? And would it cause damage?

Regards
Dave

It's the carburetor float valve. It doesn't seal and fills the crankcase with gas. I know from experience except mine happened over the winter and caused the crankshaft seal to fail as well and when I went to drain it there was almost nothing in it. Do what Old Ford Mechanic said and put a valve in the line but be diligent about turning it off every time. You could fix or replace the carburetor as well, but I would still put a valve in the line. :)

Oil Ford.
I did exactly what you said on a previous mower. And most of the time I forgot... Hope to find something a little more fool proof than me...??

I turn fuel off before I get to parking space. Park, wait 10 seconds. Remember to turn key off after engine stops from no fuel.

The inline fuel shut off valve is the best solution here. All carbureted gravity fed machines will eventually get to this point. Regarding the fuel pump, make sure it only puts out 2psi of fuel pressure, so you don't over power the float needle.

I guess I will put in an inline shut off. I didn't mention that I'm not the only person using this mover as it's at the cabin. I could purchase a new car too?

Norman ST I like you handle and also your comment on the 2 PSI.

A low pressure inline pump on a gravity system doesn't ensure gas won't flow past when off. They are usually made so gas can't be pumped back to the tank. As others said, the best solution is a shutoff and a memory. Without those 2, here's a $100 option that would probably do the trick.

Blackhole49. Yikes that's 2/3 the cost of the mower I bought. I'll have to look at the Model/serial # on the engine and see if a new carb with shutoff valve is a possibility.

You could use the gas shut off valve to shut the mower off, then you couldn't forget. I had to do that on mine because the kill switch wire is not working. ALso, I believe ethanol is what causes the carb parts to fail on older Briggs stuff. I had the same thing happen to me and wrecked an engine. Use no ethanol gas since and have had no problems.

After trying to repair a rider carb and finding all the gunk that ethanol leaves, I have started using premium gas with no ethanol for my mowers. After sitting all winter with no fuel stabilizer they both fired right up this Spring. I use it in my TE-20, too.
