Briggs and stratton carb

I have an 18hp Briggs and Stratton twin that keeps flooding. I have had two carburetors on it and it does the same thing. Could something cause it to flood other than the carburetor? Thanks

I would shake those floats if they're metal to see if they have gas in them. Some of that composite material used on floats will do the same when gas soaked. If the gas is fed by a fuel pump the pressure may be too great for the needle valve to shut off the flow of gas. Sometimes a pressure regulator is required. Hal

The float does not have hole in it. I have not seen a pressure regulator before. What about putting a smaller fuel line on it?

Well I'm sure you checked the float level and that there isn't trash between the needle and seat or needle not seating for some other reason. But just incase I'll mention those.

I thought maybe something other than the carburetor was causing it because the 2nd carburetor I put on it was running fine on the other engine. Thanks for the help.

Low compression, weak spark, leaky head gasket...all could cause flooding even if the carb is OK

Check and make sure you're getting a nice hot spark 1st...then check your compression if you can...tough to do on some of these with compression release

Does the carb have a built in fuel pump ?

If so, those carbs can be nasty. Be sure float swings freely on pivot rod. If float is bent out of square, it can contact carb body, allowing excess fuel to enter. A fuel filter is a good idea too.

It does have the attached fuel pump. I put a fuel shut off on it and even with it barely turned on it will flood.

Does the other engine have the tank mounted higher or lower than the engine? Mine was doing the same thing as it sat (on a irregular basis). It's also why you see a lot of tractors on Ebay with blown engines. I put fuel shut offs on everything I own for the sole purpose of running the carb dry so it won't gum up in storage. Also works with the flooding thing.

Is there a risk of that with the bolens 750 Husky? It has a small shut off just below the fuel tank - its a bit of a pain to turn on and off (although I could put an in line cut off I suppose) and sometimes i think about just leaving it on but as with my 8n I have been warned that this could flood the carb and get into the engine.
